Poll of the Week: Golden Goggle Female Athlete of the Year (Results)

PHOENIX, Arizona, November 25. THE Golden Goggles took place last night in Los Angeles, with the best and brightest from USA Swimming showing up to mingle and reunite with friends and teammates. Over the past few weeks we’ve asked you in our polls on swimmingworld.com who you think should win in some of the top categories at the awards ceremony, and our most recent one was a runaway win for Katie Ledecky in the Female Athlete of the Year category.

With 77.07 percent of votes, Ledecky was the overwhelming choice of those who voted in this poll, and as it turned out, won the actual award last night. Ledecky made a strong case to be given this honor based on four gold medals and two world records at the world championships, but her performances at her high school championships that broke national high school records should be considered as well. Coming in second in the voting was Missy Franklin, who had an astounding year as well with six golds at world championships. Franklin got 20.49 percent of votes, followed by 5K world championship gold medalist Haley Anderson with 2.44 percent.

Now we’re moving on to the big topic that is still making news, at least in the swimming community. Michael Phelps put his name back in drug testing a few months ago to keep his options open in terms of a comeback after more than a year away from the sport. What this action does is confirm that he has been strongly considering the possibility of getting back into competitive swimming, but the real question is, will he follow through? And that’s our new poll question. Do you believe Michael Phelps will follow through and make an official return to competition in 2014? Go to our home page at swimmingworld.com and vote yes or no. You have until next Monday to place your vote.
