Polish Short Course Championships: Several National Records Tumble

GORZOW WIELKOPOLSKI, Poland, November 26. THE first evening of action at the Polish Short Course Championships featured quite a few Polish records falling by the wayside.

Konrad Czerniak raced to a 21.38 in the men's 50 free to set a national record. That swim beat Bart Kizierowski's 2000 record of 21.43. Ewa Cecieszko followed with a Polish record in the women's 50 breast with a 30.61. That readout clipped Beata Kaminska's 2005 mark of 30.71.

Marcin Babuchowski cleared 51 seconds in the men's 100 fly with a 50.81. That erased his national mark of 51.60 set last December. Pawel Korzeniowski cut time from his national record in the men's 400 free with a 3:37.78. He surpassed his previous mark of 3:38.20 set in 2005.

Donata Kilijanska chopped two seconds off the national record in the women's 1500 free with a 16:35.51. Her time cleared Justyna Hampel's record of 16:37.02 set last year.

In semifinal swims, Piotr Galka posted a 59.20 in the men's 100 breast. That effort beat Mariusz Winogrodzki's national standard of 59.39.

The evening also featured two national records in relays. Marcin Unold, Kizierowski, Jakub Kieruj and Robert Wilk won the men's 200 medley in 1:38.12, beating the previous standard of 1:41.88. Karolina Szczepaniak, Dominika Zak, Aleksandra Nowacka and Joanna Golebiowska clocked a 3:47.07 to win the women's 400 free relay. That clocking nipped the previous mark of 3:47.26 set in 2005.

In other action, Mateusz Matczak touched out Marcin Tarczynski, 1:55.16 to 1:55.55, to capture the men's 200 IM. Radoslaw Kawecki won the men's 200 back in 1:49.56, while Mirela Olczak claimed the women's 200 fly title in 2:06.97 – a junior national record. Alicja Tchorz touched first in the women's 200 IM with a 2:11.68.
