Polish Long Course Championships: Alicja Tchorz Completes Backstroke Sweep

OSTROWIEC SWIETOKRZYSKI, Poland, May 23. ALICJA Tchorz has put on a show thus far at the Polish Long Course Championships. She completed a backstroke sweep, each performance ending in a national record.

During prelims of the men's 100 fly, Marcin Babuchowski erased Pawel Korzeniowski's Polish record of 52.99 from March 2008. Babuchowski qualified first with a time of 52.60. Marcin Tarczynski had the last laugh with a winning time of 52.56 in finals for the win and the record. Konrad Czerniak placed second in 52.63 with Babuchowski taking third in 52.66 for an exciting finish.

Tchorz completed the backstroke record sweep in the first three days of swimming. After claiming the 100 and 200 back national titles and records, Tchorz made it a clean sweep in the 50 with a 28.96 during finals to become the first sub-29 Polish woman. During prelims, she broke the national record of 29.18 set by Aleksandra Urbanczyk in May 2005. Tchorz clipped the former record with a top-seeded time of 29.17. In finals, Urbanczyk finished second in 29.58 with Klaudia Naziebo taking third in 29.63.

The Polish records continued to fall in the men's 50 back. During prelims, Radoslaw Kawecki tied Bartosz Kizierowski's 2002 national record of 25.52. Kizierowski, however, returned fire in finals with a winning time of 25.27 for the record. Marcin Unold took second in 25.56 with Kawecki settling for third in 25.86.

Slawomir Wolniak provided another Polish record with a 2:10.90 in the men's 100 breast. That swim beat the 2006 mark of 2:11.78 set by Slawomir Kuczko. Kuczko claimed second in 2:11.51, under the former mark as well, while Mariusz Winogrodzki took a distant third in 2:15.40.

Mirela Olczak claimed the women's 100 fly title in 1:01.06 to start the evening. Anna Dowgiert (1:01.58) and Marcelina Radlinska (1:01.60) placed second and third. In the women's 100 breast, Agnieszka Ostrowska won in 2:29.32. Weronika Paluszek took second in 2:30.94, while Paulina Zachoszcz touched third in 2:32.36.

Donata Kilijanska won the women's 400 free in an exciting finish against Paula Zukowska, 4:17.16 to 4:17.66. Dominika Gaweczyk took third in 4:21.37. Przemyslaw Stanczyk earned the men's 400 free crown in 3:51.27. Lukasz Giminski finished second in 3:53.29 with Krzysztof Pielowski placing third in 3:53.43.

The 200 IMs completed the night. Karolina Szczepaniak won the women's title in 2:16.19 with Anna Kowalzcyk taking a close second in 2:16.95. Tchorz picked up third in 2:17.59. Mateusz Matczak clinched the men's crown in 2:01.23 with Lukasz Wojt finishing second in 2:01.38. Korzeniowski wound up third in 2:01.85.
