Pointe-Claire, Langley Olympians Claim 2006 Canadian Age Group Championships

CALGARY, Alberta, Canada. July 24. THE Pointe-Claire Swim Club captured the men’s team title at the 2006 Canadian Age Group Swimming Championships, while the Langley Olympians Swim Club took the women’s team crown. Meanwhile, the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club placed first in the combined team standings.

Pointe-Claire, which has produced more than a dozen Olympians including the late Victor Davis showed a vast improvement over last season when it didn’t crack the top-20 overall at these championships. Ander Sieira-Dovali, Matthew Grillo, Daniel Jensen and Karim Zayed proved to be some of its top performers during the meet.

‘’We’re in a rebuilding process and this year we made a team commitment,’’ Pointe-Claire coach Jason Bowes said. ‘’We fared much better than expected and everyone contributed to the effort.’’

One of the former Pointe-Claire stars was Anne Jardin, a swimming medalist at the 1976 Olympics. Her cousin Barbara Jardin, who swims for cross town rivals CAMO in Montreal, earned her fourth gold medal this week on Sunday with a win in the 400 IM in the girls 14-year-old age group.

‘’I had to work really hard for that win tonight,’’ Jardin said. ‘’In the second length I had a lot of trouble. But I just kept focused on the goal I wanted to accomplish.’’

The Edmonton Keyano Club received two more wins (100 freestyle and 50 butterfly) from Karl Volk in the boys 14-year-old age group. He ended the meet with seven gold medals and three provincial records. Also, Kier Maitland of Keyano notched his third gold in the men’s 17-18 age group placing first in the 800 freestyle.

The Langley Club gained momentum on Sunday by victories in the 16-18 group by Rachelle Salli in the 400 IM and Annika Schmuck in the 200 breaststroke.
