Kate Sanderson Earns Trials Cut At Plantation Sectionals

Despite not winning a single event on the final night, the Colorado Stars won the Speedo Southern Zone South Sectional Championships in Plantation, Florida. The Stars finished the weekend with 891.5 points, ahead of South Florida Aquatic Club with 816 and third place Gator Swim Club with 771.5. Two new Olympic Trials cuts were earned tonight as well.

Kate Sanderson won the women’s 800 in Olympic Trials qualifying time. The Colorado Springs sixteen year old stopped the clock at 8:49.61. Kate Magill of Seacoast finished second in 9:06.27 while Andrea Santander finished third in 9:10.22.

The top four finishers in the women’s 200 fly were all under the Trials cut, though the standard was only new for second place Isabel Ivey (2:13.36). Pine Crest’s Audrey Lacroix won the event in 2:10.55. Makos Aquatics’ Alena Kraus placed third in 2:14.27.

Marcelo Acosta of Azura completed a distance sweep on the weekend, earning the 1500 title in 15:35.42. Eric Geunes of Gator Swim Club finished second in 16:00.70 while Pine Crest’s William Haeffner touched third in 16:23.03.

Unattached Zach Chetrat dominated the men’s 200 fly finishing in 2:00.79. Second went to Bluefish’s Maxwell Miranda in 2:04.42. Mason Wilby of Gator Swim Club was third in 2:05.08.

The trio of Canadian National Team sprinters representing Pine Crest took the podium again in tonight’s 100 freestyle. Sandrine Mainville led the way in 54.81 while Penny Oleksiak and Chantal Van Landeghem followed in 55.05 and 55.32. Missy Franklin wound up fourth in 55.40.

In the men’s 100 freestyle Swim Atlanta’s Karl Krug was first to the wall in 50.83. Daytona Beach’s Viktor Toth touched second in 51.32 while Jhonny Perez finished third in 51.58.

Alia Atkinson won the 200 breaststroke with a 2:32.49. Neptune’s Asia Minnes finished second. The twelve year old stopped the clock in a remarkable 2:37.78. Gator Swim Club’s Ivey rounded out the podium in 2:39.02.

Pine Crest’s Richard Funk took the men’s 200 breaststroke title in 2:14.94. South Florida’s Kile Aukerman placed third in 2:19.51. Bronze went to unattached Stankley Wu in 2:22.76.

Erin Voss was well ahead of the field in the 200 backstroke, touching in 2:11.33. Colorado Stars’ Fernanda Gonzalez and Blue Dolfins’ Ashley Boddiford were in a tighter race for second as the two finished in 2:19.05 and 2:19.95.

Martin County’s Kevin Lindgren lead a tight field in the men’s 200 backstroke. The 23 year old stopped the clock at 2:06.06. Quinn Cassidy snagged second in 2:06.25. Blue Dolfins’ Zachary Poti rounded out the top three in 2:07.33.
