Pittsburgh Sweeps Syracuse

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, October 28. FOUR Panthers garner multi-event wins, as the Pitt women's swimming and diving team races past Syracuse, 156-86, this afternoon at Trees Pool. The Panthers improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Big East.

The meet opened with the Panthers in the diving well. First, freshmen Margo Ekstrom (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Hanna Bratton (Lincoln, R.I./Moses Brown School) took third (211.35) and fourth (198.08), respectively, in the 3M board, followed by a second-place performance from Ekstrom in the 1M (230.93).

Then the gears shifted to the swimmers, and winning the first swimming event of the day was the 400 medley relay team, who stopped the clock at 3:56.37. Earning the win for the Panthers were freshman Lisa McDonnell (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield), sophomore Ruth Seiffert (Boothwyn, Pa/Garnet Valley), junior Brittany Stevens (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr Mill's/Florida State) and junior Colleen Sullivan (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton).

Just as they did a day before, the Panthers swept the 1000 free. Senior Kathy Siuda (Waterloo, Ontario/Bluevale Collegiate Institute) won the event with a 10:36.42, while junior Caitlyn Harrington (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock North) finished second at 10:51.85. Placing third was sophomore Laura Rosenberg (Newtown, Pa./Newtown) at 11:03.08 and sophomore Karla Leite (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) rounded out the top four in the event.

Senior Kristin Brown (East Berlin, Pa./Bermundian Springs) claimed a first-place finish in the 200 free when she touched the wall at 1:50.63. Seiffert followed with a second-place effort at 1:55.44 in the same event.

In its second sweep of the day, senior Andrea Shoust (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./White Pines C & VS) led Pitt in the 50 free. Shoust recorded a first-place performance with a time of 24.14. Junior Kelly O'Hara (Voorhees, N.J./Timber Creek) was second at 24.39, while freshman Sarah Sullivan (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) claimed third with a time of 24.97.

In her first individual win for the Panthers, sophomore Agnes Mago (Kecskemet, Hungary/Bolyai Janos/Radford) took first in the 200 IM, after clocking in at 2:08.04. McDonnell took second (2:10.07), while freshman Sophie Cross (Thornton, Pa./Glen Mills) finished at 2:12.06 for fourth.

Adding to their list of wins on the day, Brown turned in first-place performances in the 100 free (52.52), while Mago claimed the title in the 500 free (5:02.75) and Shoust topped all in the 200 back (2:03.09).

Stevens swam to a second-place effort in the 200 fly (2:12.02), while later in the final individual event of the day, the 200 breast, Seiffert finished second with a time of 2:23.47.

Pitt capped off the meet with a win in the 400 free relay at 3:31.69. Aiding the Panthers in the victory was Brown, Shoust, McDonnell and freshman Tiffany Malatesta (Vineland, N.J./Vineland).
