Pittsburgh Men Ahead After Day 1

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, January 12. THE Pittsburgh men lead Maryland and Villanova heading into day two of competition. THe University of Maryland men's swimming and diving ended the first night of this weekend's competition ahead of Villanova (131-34).

Tonight's meet began with the 1650-yard freestyle. On the men's side for Maryland, transfer Brian Honore was the top finisher in third place (16:36.14). Freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio) came in right behind Honore with a fourth-place swim (16:37.38).

The Terps picked up a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with the team of sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa.), sophomore Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.), freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia) and senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) swimming a season high of a 1:32.74.

Junior Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) led the Terps in the 100 butterfly with a 52.40, good for a fourth-place finish. Cullen followed in fifth (52.69) with sophomore Kyle Glennon (Jarrettsville, Md.) and senior Andrew Doeck (Boca Raton, Fla.) coming in sixth and ninth respectively.

Kim won the 100 backstroke event with a season-high time of 50.35. Damjanic swam to a fourth-place finish (52.65) with junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) coming in fifth (53.25).

Golaszewski was the top finisher for the Terps in third place for the 400 individual medley (4:13.83) while senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) followed in fourth (4:14.93).

In the 100 free, Gray led the meet with a first-place finish and a time of 46.61. Cullen led the Terps in the 100 breaststroke, coming in fourth (58.13) with senior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) in fifth (59.01).

In three-meter diving competition, junior Derek Hock (Aliquippa, Pa.) and freshman Patrick Meck (Rockville, Md.) took third and fourth place with 270.05 and 236.95 points respectively.

Night one wrapped up with the 200 free relay. Maryland took second in the event with the team of Kim, Gray, sophomore John Closs (New Providence, N.J.) and junior Jake DiPiazza (Silver Spring, Md.) swimming a 1:24.55.

Competition will continue tomorrow morning. Saturday's meet marks the last home meet for the Terps this season. Seniors Andrew Doeck, Danny Gray, Tony Miller and Tim Shepard will be honored starting at 10:45 am, prior to the meet. Tomorrow's events will include the 500 free, 400 medley relay, 200 free, 200 IM, 200 fly, 50 free, 200 back, 200 breast, 400 free relay, three meter diving (women) and one meter diving (men).
