Pitt Defeats Maryland for the First Time in Over 10 Years

PITTSBURGH, Penn. January 14. FOR the first time in over a decade the Pitt’s women’s swimming and diving team defeated Maryland, 209-141. The squad also earned a win over Villanova, 240-113 this afternoon at Trees Pool. Pitt’s overall record improves to 5-1 and 3-1 in the Big East.

Junior Kristin Brown (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) earned three first-place finishes in today’s events and five over the two-day meet. Brown quickly earned her first win of the day with a 4:58.38 finish in the 500 free. Later in the meet, Brown led the pack in the 200 free (1:50.82), as well.

In the final swimming event, Brown teamed with freshman Stacie Safritt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and seniors Kelly Redcay (Reading, Pa./Wilson) and Jordan Wallace (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) teamed to swim a first-place time of 3:25.93 in the 400 free relay.

Another top multi-event finisher on the day was junior Andrea Shoust (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./White Pines C & VS). Shoust swam the first leg of the 400 medley relay, where she was teamed with freshman Ruth Seiffert (Boothwyn, Pa./Garnett Valley), sophomore Brittany Stevens (Peachtree, Ga./Starr’s Mill) and Redcay. The squad stopped the clock at 3:52.29 for a second-place effort.

Later, Shoust took gold in the 200 back (2:03.80), while freshman Laura Rosenberg (Newtown, Pa./Newtown) placed third (2:11.09).

In the 200 fly, senior Amy Miteff (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) and sophomore Sarah Wagner (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) took second and third place.

Wallace returned to action and finished first in the 50 free (23.87), while sophomore Kelly O’Hara (Voorhees, N.J./Timber Creek) turned in a third-place performance (24.26).

In the 200 breast, freshmen Karla Leite (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Seiffert took second and third.

The meet concluded as sophomores Kristin Caiazzo (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley) and Megan McCandless (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) finished ahead of all the Villanova divers, but took second and third in the 3M boards after a Maryland diver placed ahead of the duo.
