Piper Wins Second Big Ten Swimmer of the Year Honor

BLOOMINGTON, IN, February 22. CARLEY Piper, Olympic Gold Medal winner from the Athens 4 x 200 free relay, has added another honor to her cache. She is the Big Ten Swimmer of the Year, per conference and Badger reports at the championship meet in Bloomington this past weekend.

This is Carly’s second such honor and allows Wisconsin to boast the winner of this coveted recognition five of the last six years.

“I think Carly is very worthy of such a prestigious honor,” head coach Eric Hansen said. “To get the award twice in one’s career is awesome, and to keep the award in the program is a great thing, too.”

At the conference meet, Piper won the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle, both for the fourth straight time. She has led UW to a No. 8 national ranking and a 10-1 dual meet record.

In March, Piper will compete in at least three events at the NCAA championships, including the 200-, the 500- and the 1,650-yard freestyle races.

The conference also announced tonight the all-conference teams, and Piper and Susan Johnson were UW’s first-team members. Andrea Wiesner was picked as Wisconsin’s sportsmanship award winner.
