Phill Hansel Duals, Day Two

HOUSTON, Texas, November 15. THE Rice foursome of Pam Zelnick, Skylar Craig, Diane Gu and Carlyann Miller sprinted to a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay to close out the final day of action at the annual Phill Hansel Dual Meets, a five-way series of swim meets held Nov.14-15 across town at the University of Houston Rec Center Natatorium.

The Owls went 3-1 in the meet's final team scores. Rice defeated Florida International 239-75, Incarnate Word 260-87 and Vanderbilt 256-80. The Owls were defeated by meet host Houston 187-160.

Rice posted its best time of the year, 1:36.69, in the 200-free relay. It was the only race the Blue & Gray won Saturday after winning three on the first day of action on Friday night. The Owls notched second place finishes in five events. Senior Caitlin Warner swam the best midseason 500-freestyle of her career, breaking the five-minute barrier with a 4:59.97. Warner led a 2-3-4 Rice finish in the 500 with freshman Nicole Delaloye and Alex O'Brien.

Owls Angela Wo, Louise Gligla, Ashten Ackerman and Erin Mattson bunched up second-through-fifth place finishes, respectively, in the 200-butterfly. Sophomore Kait Chura was second in the 200-backstroke and Zelnick was second in the 100-breaststroke. Rice registered a host of season-best times on the year. The only events where the team did not score was in the diving where the Owls do not compete. In counting up the meet points for the swimming events only, the Owls performed well enough to win all four meets.

Rice improved its season dual meet record to 4-5. The Owl swimmers will next be in action at the Cornhusker Invitational on Nov. 20-23 in Lincoln, Neb.

Special thanks to Rice for contributing this report.
