Phelps to Compete Every Day of the FINA World Swimming Championships in Indy’s Conseco Fieldhouse

INDIANAPOLIS – U.S. swimming sensation Michael Phelps will have the opportunity to duplicate his six-gold-medal effort at the recent Athens Olympics in the upcoming FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Phelps, 19, from Towson, Md., is entered in six events, and fans will have the opportunity to see him in action in every session of the five-day event (Oct. 7-11) provided that he qualifies for the finals of each event he has entered.

Phelps, who won two bronze medals in addition to the six golds at Athens, is scheduled to swim in the 200-meter freestyle; the 200-meter butterfly; the 100-, 200- and 400-meter individual medleys and the 4×200-meter relay.

The 200m free takes place Thursday, Oct. 7. The 400m IM and 2x400m free relay are Friday, Oct. 8. Saturday, Oct. 9 is the 200m IM. Sunday, Oct. 10 is the 100m IM. The 200m fly will take place on Monday, Oct. 11 – the final day of the competition.

Phelps leads a star-studded U.S. team that includes 28 members of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team. Also entered are Olympic gold medal winners Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.) in the three backstroke events (50 meters, 100 meters and 200 meters); Amanda Beard (Irvine, Calif.) in the three breaststroke events as well as the 100m and 200m IMs; and Natalie Coughlin (Concord, Calif.) in the 100m free, 50m back, 100m back and 4x100m free relay.

Also on the U.S. team is the legendary four-time Olympian Jenny Thompson (Dover, N.H.), who became the most decorated U.S. Olympian ever (12 medals) at the Athens Olympic Games. The 31-year-old Thompson, in what is expected to be the last meet of her career, is entered in the 50m and 100m flys, and the 50m free.

It also may be the final meet for Elkhart, Indiana’s Lindsay Benko. Benko is entered in the 200m free and the 4x200m free relay. Another Hoosier, Bryce Hunt of Newburgh, will swim the 200m back.
