Performance of the Week: Oct. 30, 2012

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 30. LAST Saturday in Tempe, Arizona, the men's swim team from Grand Canyon University, a Division II school, won their dual meet against Division I school Arizona State by five points. While the team victory would rightfully warrant a Performance of the Week honor, it was one swim in particular that deserves to be singled out for this week's recognition.

Eetu Karvonen, the reigning Division II national champion in both breaststroke events, swam a 54.89 in the 100 breast on Saturday, ranking him fourth in collegiate swimming … across all divisions. Only three Division I swimmers have gone faster than Karvonen so far this season, with the top overall time standing at 54.28. Karvonen won the 100 breast at the March NCAA championships with a 53.29, which would have placed 12th at the Division I meet. We're looking for some big things to come from this senior from Finland and Grand Canyon University.

Congratulations Eetu, you won our Performance of the Week!
