Performance of the Week: Jan. 29, 2013

PHOENIX, Arizona, January 29. COLLEGE swimming featured some great dual meets last weekend, including some big matchups between Arizona and Cal, Arizona and Stanford and Auburn versus Florida.

California's Tom Shields made his return to collegiate competition on Friday in the dual meet against Arizona, posting some pretty quick times in the butterfly events. He swam a 1:46.02 to win the 200 butterfly and a 46.54 in the 100 butterfly, in addition to a blistering fast 20.10 butterfly split on the 200 medley relay. Shields wrapped up his day with a 43.39 split on the 400 free relay.

Shields is the defending champion in the 100 fly and 100 back and runner-up in the 200 fly, and looks primed to be the man to beat in Indianapolis in March. Congratulations, Tom. You've won our Performance of the Week.
