Performance of the Week: April 24, 2012

PHOENIX, Arizona, April 24. WE had several competitions around the world last weekend in southern California, Russia and South Africa, not to mention a great diving meet in Mexico.

For our Performance of the Week we're going to Russia for the honor, and the final of the men's 100 freestyle. Five swimmers went under 49 seconds, which makes it one of the deepest fields for a 400 freestyle relay that you are going to find in the world this year, except for Australia, where all eight swimmers were under 49 at the Olympic Trials, and France, where five also went under 49 at their Trials. That 100 free final in Russia was won by Danila Izotov with a 48.27, with Nikita Lobintsev, Andrey Grechin, Vlad Morozov and Sergey Fesikov rounding out the top five. This puts Russia in heavy medal contention for that 400 free relay in London, with the Americans still waiting to show their hand for this event.

So congratulations to the Russian sprinters, our performers of the week.
