Penn State vs. Virginia Tech

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania, October 23. THE Penn State women's swimming & diving team captured its first home meet of the season as the Nittany Lions downed Virginia Tech, 187-113, during a non-conference battle at the McCoy Natatorium.

With the victory, Penn State improves to 2-0 on the season. The loss is the first setback for Virginia Tech as the Hokies fall to 2-1.

During the meet, Amy Modglin captured three individual events as she was lethal at the 200-yard distance. She took the top spot in the 200-free with a time of 1:49.71 before touching the wall first in the 200-backstroke with a 1:58.82 clocking. Later, she wrapped up the meet with a victory in the 200-IM after cruising to a time of 2:03.60.

Not to be outdone, Hailey Campbell and Paige Whitmire each took home three titles as well. The two combined to lead both of the victorious relay teams before also capturing individual events. In the 200-medley relay, they joined with Rachel Butler and Mackenzie Powers to place first with a time of 1:42.88. Later, they teamed with Samantha Palser and Erin Thomas to win the 400-freestyle relay after finishing the course in 3:26.82.

Campbell also took the 100-backstroke after completing the event in 56.22, while Whitmire won the 50-free after clocking in at 23.61. Three of their relay partners also won individual disciplines as Thomas finished first in the 100-free with a time of 52.02, Butler captured the title in the 100-breastroke in 1:03.56, and Powers finished in a dead heat with teammate Alex Young for the top spot in the 100-butterfly after they both touched the wall in 55.92.

Young later returned to the pool to win the 200-butterfly outright after she outpaced her competition and clocked in at 2:00.88. Merritt Krawczyk rounded out the individual victors as she took the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:19.04.

Megan Marco also had a strong meet while turning in the top diving scores for Penn State. In the 1-meter board, she finished second with a 266.10 mark. She also was the top PSU scorer in the 3-meter dive after posting a 241.42.

The Nittany Lions will take some time off before heading to Charlottesville, Virginia for a two-day tri-meet against Virginia and Indiana on November 19-20. The meet will start at 6 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
