Passages: Southern Pacific Masters Swimmer Steve Schofield

PASADENA, California, July 18. STEVE Schofield, 75, the vice chair of the Southern Pacific LMSC (SPMA) and member of the South West Aquatic Masters (SWM), has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

During his Masters swimming career, Schofield earned two individual and three relay Top Ten achievements and garnered All-American honors in five long distance events and one pool relay swim, according to the United States Masters Swimming site.

In 1995, Schofield finished ninth in both the short course meters men's 60-64 800 free (14:26.15) and 1500 free (27:50.26). Later, he helped SWM's 240-279 400 free long course meter relay to a first-place ranking at a time of 5:33.43 in 2005. That same year, Schofield also helped the 800 free (12:35.87) and 400 medley relays (6:40.78) to fourth-place rankings on the USMS Top Ten lists.

Schofield also earned the Dorothy Donnelly USMS Service Award in 2002. The award honors volunteers who give their time, talent, and expertise to help all phases of the USMS programs.

Swimming World Magazine sends its condolences to Schofield's friends and family.

July 22, 2007. I just noticed the Tribute To Steve on the SWAM page. He was my High School swim coach and he hired me to work at his swim school and to help coach the Cleveland High girls team when it was started. I am a lifelong swimmer largely because of him. I swim almost every day and think of his days as my coach often. He was a terrific human being – and a truly nice guy. One in a million. The Pierce Pool should be named in his memory. Few have done so much to advance swimming at all levels, but especially Masters, than Steve. Adam
