Passages: North Baltimore’s Alec Cosgarea, 17

BALTIMORE, Maryland, July 10. THE North Baltimore Aquatic Club community is reeling after the death of Alec Cosgarea, 17, after dying from injuries sustained from a one-car accident while driving home at 10:20 p.m. on Monday night according to the Baltimore Sun.

Cosgarea was an integral part of the NBAC swimming community as both a swimmer at the McDonogh School and with NBAC. His brother Drew is a member of the Stanford Cardinal, while his brother Will swims in high school. Their father, Andrew, swam at Penn State, while their mother, Sheila, swam at Virginia.

“The entire team is devastated,” McDonogh head coach Scott Ward told the Baltimore Sun. “He could be [joking], and then kind of flip that switch when he needed to be a competitor. He was very good under pressure.”

Cosgarea, an All-American, was a school-record holder at McDonogh.

“Alec began swimming for NBAC at age six and demonstrated determination and versatility in his career,” Bob Bowman said in a statement while with the U.S. National Team in Knoxville, Tenn. “Alec is an example to our athletes in how he trained, how he competed and the standards that he held himself to, which will continue to inspire and motivate his teammates and coaches.”

Viewings will be held Friday at the Ruck Funeral Home, 1050 York Road in Towson, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held Saturday at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, 5200 N. Charles St. in Baltimore, at 10 a.m.
