The six-meet 2013-14 Arena Grand Prix series kicked off Nov. 14-16 in Minneapolis and continued through June. Swimmers had the opportunity to compete for $150,000 in overall prize money, with the highest-scoring eligible U.S. male and female swimmers (Conor Dwyer, Caitlin Leverenz) receiving a one-year lease of a BMW activehybrid 3 series.

No matter how you look at him, Brazil’s Cesar Cielo is head-and-shoulders ahead of his competition in the 50 meter free. he became the first person in history to win three consecutive world championship titles in the event at last summer’s meet in Barcelona.

The men’s 5K race at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships finished about as close as the Start, June 15, at Castaic Lake in Southern California.  In a photo finish, 2012 Olympian Alex Meyer (Ithaca, N.Y.) touched out Jordan Wilimovsky (Malibu, Calif.) and Joey Pedraza (Broward, Fla.) for the victory.

Say Cheese!  Eric Ress, 23, of Santa Clara Swim Club gave a big smile before the day’s competition started at the George F. Haines International Swim Center in Santa Clara, Calif., site of the sixth and final meet of the 2013-14 Arena Grand Prix series that began in November and ended in June.

At the U.S. Nationals in Irvine, swimmer Tyler Clary accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that was all the rage on social media. Started by a Massachusetts resident who has lived with ALS since 2012, numerous celebrities and others dumped ice water on themselves and posted videos of it within 24 hours – all to raise money for research into ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Australia’s Alicia Coutts made a “big splash” at the Pan Pacific Championships in August by winning gold medals in the 100 fly and 400 medley relay and finishing runner-up in the 200 IM.

Legendary coach Peter Daland passed away Oct. 20 at the age of 93 of Alzheimer’s disease.  While coaching the men’s swimming team at the University of Southern California for 35 years (1958-92), the Trojans captured nine NCAA team titles.  He also coached the U.S. Women’s Olympic team in 1964 and the men’s in 1972.  Daland, shown here on the cover of Swimming World Magazine (June 1992) upon his retirement from USC, also was the Magazine’s co-founder in 1952 along with Robert J.H. Kiphuth.
