Parkview Boys, Brookwood Girls Take Georgia 5A High School Titles; Westminster Sweeps 4A Crowns

ATLANTA, Ga., February 15. THE Parkview boys and Brookwood girls — Gwinnett County (suburban Atlanta) rivals located just a few miles from each other on Five Forks Trickum — successfully defended their state titles at the Class AAAAA swim meet tonight at Westminster Academy.

"It was a shock," said Parkview coach Rick Creed, whose boys won their fourth state title in a row and sixth in nine years. "We graduated so many strong guys last year, and I think all fingers pointed at Centennial, Lassiter and Chattahoochee. Our kids really stepped up and performed."

One Parkview performance that had Creed leaping on the deck was senior John Millen's state record 4:28.15 in the 500 yard freestyle.

"John finally broke the school record, and he had to break the state record to do it," Creed said. Millen eclipsed former teammate Mike Kauffman's old mark of 4:29.06.

"Mike's been the best, always," said Millen's father, Tom, who was sitting with Kauffman's parents when Millen broke the record. "John's been swimming in that huge shadow for so long. He just hit a good day, I guess."

For the Brookwood girls, who won their third consecutive title, some strategic moves by coach Greg Puckett paid off. In an effort to keep Walton, one of Brookwood's top opponents, from scoring too many points, Puckett arranged for his best swimmers to go head-to-head with Walton's best.

Junior Amanda Weir, who set state records in the 100 and 200 freestyles last year but did not participate in either event tonight, took first in both the 100 butterfly (55.04) and 100 backstroke (56.71), besting Walton's Karie Haglund and Beverly Walker, respectively.

(Look for Weir to take a crack at her U.S.A. Swimming 15-16 NAG records in the 50-100 frees — 22.45/48.86 — which she set at last year's All-America Invitational at Texas at this year's meet the first weekend of next month. Weir turns 17 shortly after the meet's conclusion and the SwimAtlanta speedster has said she'd "like to put those records out of reach.")

In the 50 free, Brookwood junior Andrea Hupman and Walker tied for first (24.27), and Hupman also earned an individual title in the 100 free. Hupman's older sister, Christie, had won the state title in the 50 free the past four years.

"They all swam good as a team," Puckett said. "Coming into the meet, we weren't favored; Walton was."

The Walton girls experienced a setback when junior Maddie Pilchard, one of the favorites in the 200 free, suffered an asthma attack in the preliminaries. Pilchard finished 17th and did not qualify for the finals, but she came back to anchor Walton's state championship 200 medley relay team.

Other notable performances: When Lassiter's Bryan Lundquist and Centennial's Wesley Flatt take their talents to Auburn next year, the two will bring with them a friendly rivalry. Lundquist, who earned state titles in the 50 free, 100 butterfly, and 200 medley relay, set a state record in the 100 free (45.50) during Thursday's preliminaries. Flatt broke the record Saturday with his personal-best, state-championship time of 44.90 –fastest nationally for the 2002-03 season.

"I'd been aiming for it all season, and when Bryan beat it [Thursday], that was just the icing on the cake," said Flatt, who also won the 200 free and swam on Centennial's state-championship 400 free relay team.

"That made it a little harder, but a bit more prestigious, I suppose."

Milton senior Melissa Klein, who'll join Coach Jack Bauerle's Georgia Bulldogs this fall, ended her prep career with a pair of wins and one state record. She won the 200 IM (2:01.44) and set the record in the 100 breast (1:02.15). She's been 1:01.20/2:00.41 in non-prep competitions.

In A/AA/AAA/AAAA action, host Westminster won both the girls' and boys' divisions. On the girls' side, Westminster's Elizabeth Hill turned in a nice 200-500 free double, winning the latter in 1:47.66 and the 500 in 4:51.17. Another doubler was Christian Academy's Rachel Myco (100 butterfly-backstroke)
