Paris Open: Day Three Prelims Through Men’s 1500 Freestyle

PARIS, France, August 4. THE Paris Open continued to roll along with plenty of action during the third day of preliminary action.

Women's 50 backstroke prelims
France's Laure Manaudou nipped Spain's Nina Zhivanevskaya, 29.09 to 29.10, for the top seed heading into semis, while Ukraine picked up third and fourth by way of Iryna Amshennikova (29.60) and Kateryna Zubkova (29.65).

Croatia's Sanja Jovanovic (29.72), Hungary's Nikolett Szepesi (29.82), Germany's Janine Pietsch (29.87) and Russia's Anastasia Zueva (29.89) completed the rest of the top eight.

Men's 100 backstroke prelims
Israel's Guy Barnea led qualifying with a time of 55.62, while Germany's Thomas Rupprath (55.78) and Austria's Markus Rogan (55.93) rounded out the top three.

World-record holder Aaron Peirsol clocked a fourth-place 56.21, while Russia's Arkady Vyatchanin (56.29) and Germany's Helge Meeuw (56.39) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

The United States' Randall Bal (56.81) and Russia's Stanislav Donets (56.86) made up the rest of the top eight qualifiers to semis.

Women's 100 breaststroke prelims
Russia's Elena Bogomazova paced qualifying with a time of 1:09.52, while the 1:10s owned second through seventh.

Germany's Sarah Poewe (1:10.60), Portugal's Diana Duarte Gomes (1:10.61), Hungary's Agnes Kovacs (1:10.63), Ukraine's Yuliya Pidlisna (1:10.65), the United States' Amanda Beard (1:10.92) and Germany's Janne Schaefer (1:10.95) placed second through seventh, while Poland's Beata Kaminska (1:11.03) touched eighth.

Men's 50 breaststroke prelims
Ukraine's Valeriy Dymo clocked a 28.00 to earn the top seed going into semis, while Italy's Alessandro Terrin placed second in 28.13.

Great Britain's Chris Cook finished third in 28.25, while world-record holder Oleg Lisogor finished fourth in 28.29. Israel's Michael Malul and Great Britain's James Gibson tied for fifth in 28.31, while France's Hugues Duboscq (28.38) and Slovenia's Matjaz Markic (28.39) comprised the rest of the top eight.

Women's 100 butterfly prelims
The United States' Margaret Hoelzer led a trio of sub-1:00 efforts during prelims with a time of 59.79. Russia's Natalia Sutyagina (59.93) and Israel's Anna Gostomelsky (59.96) also joined her under a minute.

Portugal's Sara Oliveira (1:00.38), Hungary's Evelyn Verraszto (1:00.40) and Beatrix Boulsevicz (1:00.44), France's Alena Popchanka (1:00.55), Germany's Janine Pietsch (1:00.69) and Portugal's Sara Alexandra Madeira (1:00.69) each placed in the top eight.

Men's 200 butterfly prelims
Russia's Nikolay Skvortsov garnered lane four in finals with a time of 1:57.10, while Poland's Pawel Korzeniowski (1:58.40) and Japan's Hidemasa Sano (1:58.43) will bracket him.

Ukraine's Denys Sylant'yev (1:58.54) and Sergiy Advena (1:58.55) also made finals, while Austria's Dinko Jukic (1:58.96), France's Christophe Lebon (1:59.36) and Hungary's Tamas Kerekjarto (1:59.47) will also compete for the title.

Women's 400 freestyle prelims
With world-record holder Laure Manaudou electing not to swim the 400, the door is wide open for someone to win the title. Italy's Federica Pellegrini recorded the quickest morning swim with a time of 4:09.16, while Poland's Otylia Jedrzejczak (4:09.91) and Great Britain's Joanne Jackson (4:12.11) took second and third, respectively.

France's Sophie Huber (4:12.16), Germany's Meike Freitag (4:12.22), France's Coralie Balmy (4:12.75), Spain's Erika Villaecija (4:13.58) and Great Britain's Keri-Anne Payne (4:15.25) will make up the rest of the championship final.

Men's 100 freestyle prelims
France's Alain Bernard turned in the fastest swim of prelims with a time of 49.29, while Sweden's Stefan Nystrand (49.67), Russia's Andrey Grechin (49.77) and France's Fabien Gilot (49.77) rounded out the top four.

Russia's Evgeny Lagunov (49.82) and Canada's Brent Hayden (49.86) also advanced to the semis, while seventh-place Andrey Kapralov of Russia (49.92) did not move on due to the two-per country rule. Ukraine's Yuriy Yegoshin (50.10) and Canada's Matthew Rose (50.17) and Colin Russell (50.17) comprised the rest of the top nine finishers, while the United States' Jason Lezak made semis with a 13th-place 50.35.

France's Hanna Lorgeril Shcherba, Amandine Bouysset, Mylene Lazare and Malia Metella led qualifying with a time of 3:44.46.

Men's 1500 freestyle slower heat
Hungary's Gergo Kis led the slower heat of the men's 1500 free with a time of 15:17.25, while Poland's Przemyslaw Stanczyk (15:20.00) and France's Anthony Pannier (15:22.31) posted the second and third-fastest time of the early heat.
