Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships: Jessica Long Breaks World Record on Day One

EDMONTON, Canada, August 11. JESSICA Long broke a World Record tonight to win the Women's S8 400 Meter Freestyle and lead team USA on the first night of the Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships.

Her time of 4:44.97 eclipsed the previous record of 4:45.67 held by Heather Frederiksen from Great Britain. But that wasn't all for team USA in the 400 Freestyle events as Susan Beth Scott (S10) and Mallory Weggemann (S7) both claimed a gold medal in their respective classes as well. Elizabeth Stone (S9) swam well enough to earn a silver medal, and Cortney Jordan(S7) posted a season best to earn bronze.

Then it was time for the men to hit the pool in the butterfly events. Roy Perkins (S5) won the 50 meter dash just missing his American record time with a 35.78. Lantz Lamback (S7) did eclipse the American Record (33.20) in the 50-meter discipline grabbing a bronze medal in the process. As the classifications moved up so did the distance, and Rudy Garcia-Tolson (S8) shredded his preliminary American record time of 1:12.91 in the 100 by dropping over two seconds and posting a 1:10.84. That time was good enough to earn him a silver medal along with Tucker Dupree (S12) who posted a perfect 1:00.00.

Jessica Long (31.90) and Mallory Weggemann (32.11) hit the water in the splash and dash 50-meter freestyle event both winning their respective classes. The highlight of the event for Team USA came when Kelley Becherer won the S13 class sliding one one-hundredth under the previous American Record time with a 27.84! Cortney Jordan and Elizabeth Stone each claimed a silver medal for their efforts and Susan Beth Scott earned a Bronze.
