Australia went 1-2 to kick off the third morning of qualifying as Alicia Coutts (57.84) and Emma McKeon (58.29) secured the top two spots heading into the finale.  Coutts has been in the 57s already with an eighth-ranked 57.60 from the Australian Aquatic Super Series, while McKeon has a ninth-ranked 57.66 from the Commonwealth Games to her credit.

USA’s Claire Donahue (58.41) and Kendyl Stewart (58.47) were the top two Americans, locking down berths in the A final from third and fourth, while USA’s Felicia Lee was relegated to the B final after taking fifth overall in 58.59.

China’s Lu Ying (6th, 58.74), Canada’s Katerine Savard (9th, 59.15), Brazil’s Etiene Medeiros (10th, 59.29) and Canada’s Audrey Lacroix (11th, 59.40) took advantage of the two-per-country rule that only allows two of any nation to make the championship heat, as those four swimmers will make up the backhalf of the A final tonight.

The U.S. demonstrated its domination of the event with a 1-2-3-4-5, and paid for it badly due to the two-per-country rule this evening in the 100 fly.

The two superstars in the event, Ryan Lochte (51.55) and Michael Phelps (51.57) powered their way to the A final for the Stars and Stripes.  Phelps leads the world with a preliminary swim of 51.17 from U.S. Nationals, while Lochte jumped to fifth in the world with his swim.

Unfortunately for the U.S., the team lost a lot of firepower out of the top eight as USA’s Tim Phillips finished third overall in 51.73 to make the B final, while second-ranked Tom Shields (51.29 from Nationals) and ninth-ranked Matt Ellis (51.73 from Nationals) were pushed out of finals with a 52.00 and 52.01, respectively.  With Shields DQing the 200 fly, and missing finals in the 100 fly, he’s definitely had a rough meet.  Shields will have to hope his 51.29 from Nationals holds up against Lochte, Phelps and Phillips as Phelps’ 51.17 from prelims at Nationals does not count in terms of 2015 Worlds qualifying.

Australia’s Tommaso D’Orsogna (6th, 52.56), Japan’s Kenta Hirai (7th, 52.70), Japan’s Hirofumi Ikebata (8th, 52.71), Brazil’s Thiago Pereira (9th, 52.91), Australia’s Chris Wright (11th, 53.12) and Brazil’s Nicholas Santos (14th, 53.58) moved up to the A final due to the two-per-country rule.

World-record holder Katie Ledecky of the U.S. turned in, what is for her, an easy-speed 4:03.09 this morning to dust off another Janet Evans Pan Pacs record.  Ledecky’s swim this morning smashed Evans’ 1989 mark of 4:04.53, and already is two full seconds faster than the 4:05.19 Chloe Sutton used to win this event four years ago.

Ledecky, who already smoked the world record at U.S. Nationals with a 3:58.86, is an easy favorite to lower Laure Manaudou’s 2007 Australian All-Comers record of 4:02.61, and should be well on her way to a third individual title after doubling up on night one with the 200 and 800 crowns.

USA’s Cierra Runge, who was bumped out of a 2015 Worlds qualifying spot in the 800 free by NBAC teammate Becca Mann on night one, isn’t looking for that to happen in the 400 free as she charged to a 4:06.73 for the second seed in the middle distance event.  She went 4:04.67 at Nationals to rank eighth in the world, and could be on the road to a faster time tonight.

Venezuela’s Andreina Pinto (3rd, 4:07.48), New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle (6th, 4:08.64), Australia’s Bronte Barratt (7th, 4:09.30), Australia’s Alann Bowles (8th, 4:09.53), Canada’s Brittany MacLean (9th, 4:09.75) and Canada’s Samantha Cheverton (11th, 4:14.44) will also compete in the championship heat as a load of swimmers were relegated out of the top eight due to the two-per-country rule.

The one swimmer here at Pan Pacs who could have just coasted through prelims and made a guaranteed A final due to the two-per-country rule is Korea’s Tae Hwan Park as the lone representative of his country in the heats.  But, the defending champion would have none of it.  Park showed some pride with a 3:46.10 to take the top seed headed into the finale. He has a lot more in the tank with a fourth-ranked 3:43.96 from the NSW State Championships earlier this year.

USA’s Connor Jaeger secured the second seed with a time of 3:46.20, not too far off his eighth-ranked 3:45.34 from the Bulldog Grand Slam, while Australia’s David McKeon qualified third in 3:47.81.  Japan’s Kosuke Hagino, the 400 IM winner, qualified fourth in 3:48.92.  McKeon (3:43.72) and Hagino (3:43.90) are ranked second and third in the world as the championship heat is going to be loaded tonight.

Australia’s Mack Horton and USA’s Michael McBroom also made the A final with a pair of 3:49.07s to tie for fifth.

Canada’s Ryan Cochrane (8th, 3:50.08) and Japan’s Yuki Kobori (10th, 3:50.59) both earned spots in the championship heat with Australia’s Jordan Harrison getting dumped into the B final after a seventh-place 3:49.66 due to the two-per-country rule.

Cochrane, the world-leader in the event with a 3:43.46 from the Commonwealth Games, will need to put on the steam in finals after barely making the finale this morning.

This evening should see a special finale in the women’s 200-meter backstroke as the World, American, Commonwealth and Australian record holders went 1-2 in qualifying this morning.

Australia’s Belinda Hocking, the top swimmer in the Commonwealth with a 2:06.06 from 2011 to her credit, will take on world-record holder Missy Franklin of the U.S. in what will be one of the best head-to-head matchups this week.  Hocking qualified first in 2:08.99 with Franklin continuing to round into form with a second-seeded 2:09.00 after back spasms threatened to bump her from the meet altogether.

Hocking is the top swimmer in the world this year with a 2:06.40 at the NSW State Championships, while Franklin has the fifth-ranked 2:08.38 from U.S. Nationals.

USA’s Elizabeth Beisel, who slipped on the start of the event at Nationals, will be looking to get a spot on the 2015 World roster after qualifying third overall in 2:09.24 to make her way into the A final.

Canada’s Hilary Caldwell (2:09.72) and Dominique Bouchard (2:09.73) took fourth and fifth, while USA’s Elizabeth Pelton was relegated to the B final with a sixth-place 2:09.95.

Australia’s Emily Seebohm (8th, 2:10.99),  Japan’s Sayaka Akase (10th, 2:11.24) and Japan’s Marie Kamimura (14th, 2:13.96) also will compete in the A final as USA, Canada and Australia lost a bunch of talent out of the finals due to the two-per-country rule.

In a shocker, top-seeded and defending champion Ryan Lochte of the U.S. decided to be a late scratch in the final heat, leaving Ryan Murphy (1:55.73) and Tyler Clary (1:56.45) as the top Americans with the second and third seeds in prelims.  Japan’s Ryosuke Irie topped the heats with a 1:55.10, just a second off Lochte’s Pan Pacs record of 1:54.12 from 2010.

Lochte was not looking forward to a potential triple tonight in the 100 fly, 200 back and 400 free relay; and definitely did not want to potentially set up a 2015 Worlds triple of the 100 fly, 200 back and 800 free relay next summer.

Irie leads the world this year with a 1:53.91 from Japanese Nationals, while Murphy is seventh with a 1:55.99 and Clary is third with a 1:54.73.  Lochte, however, decided to scratch to focus on the 100 fly tonight as he hasn’t lived up to his top-seeded 1:53.97 this year with just a 1:56.47 at Nationals.

Australia’s Mitch Larkin (1:56.86), Japan’s Kosuke Hagino (1:56.94), Australia’s Josh Beaver (1:57.52), Brazil’s Leonardo de Deus (9th, 1:59.60) and New Zealand’s Corey Main (10th, 1:59.85) also picked up spots in the finale with Australia’s Josh Beaver (1:57.52) and Japan’s Haya Matsubara (1:58.27) both being punted due to the two-per-country rule.
