Pan-Am Maccabiah Diary: The Day Before Competition

SANTIAGO, Chile, December 27. I (Sara) am writing this entry due to a coaches meeting that Becca had to go to. It is going to be short and sweet because we are missing out on dinner.

Today we went to a vineyard and learned a lot about the Chilean countryside. It was absolutly gorgeous and we took lots and lots of
pictures.

Tomorrow competition starts in the morning and then we have opening ceremonies at night. The events are 50 meter breast which Becca is
swimming, 100 fly which Leah and I are swimming, 200 free which I am
swimming, and 400 IM which I am swimming. Sounds like fun, huh? Oh, and may I mention, I didn't sign up for all those events so it should be lots of fun.

At the vineyard we got to taste-test the different wines and learned why they put roses at the end of each line. Driving there, we went past some
corn fields and the joke was that the corn must be knee-high by the 4th
of December. Ha, ha.

Anyway, got to run. Leah is getting hungry and wants to see her Aussie boys.

Editor's note: Some background on the Schwartz sisters, all members of the U.S. Pan-Am Maccabiah team: They all grew up outside Madison, Wisconsin and have been swimming since they were four or five. They all swam in high school and for USA Swimming teams.

Becca is now 24 and living in Philadelphia, working at Drexel University as a Germantown Academy swim coach and at the Maccabi USA offices part time. She graduated from the University of Iowa and is now working on her MBA at Drexel.

Sara is a 21 year-old senior biology major at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, and will be completing her fourth year of swimming this year. Leah is a 16 year-old junior in high school and is looking forward to her college search coming up.

"We are all very excited to be sharing this experience together," writes Becca. Not too many families they have done something like this.
