Pair of Spanish National Records Fall at Spanish Championships

BARCELONA, Spain, July 25. LAST night, a pair of Spanish national records went down at the Spanish National Championships held in Barcelona, Spain. The meet is taking place in the long course meter format.

Angela San Juan Cisneros lowered her standard of 26.96 set on June 14, 2003 with a time of 26.78 in the women's 50 butterfly. That performance tied her for 14th in the world this year.

Meanwhile, Rafael Munoz broke a tie with Javier Noriega for the Spanish national record in the men's 50 fly as both had clocked matching times of 24.17 previously. Last night, Munoz touched the wall in 24.13 to break the tie, while beating Noriega head-to-head for the national title. Noriega wound up second in 24.71.

Additionally, several other meet records fell during the first night of swimming. Tatiana Rouba set the women's 100 free meet record with a winning time of 55.65, just coming up short of her national record of 55.55. In the men's 100 free, Eduard Lorente edged his meet record of 50.11 with a time of 50.11. The time is still well off his Spanish record of 49.34.

In the men's 200 breaststroke, Melquiades Alvarez knocked a half-second off the previous standard of 2:16.36 set by Mark Capdevila in 1998 with a time of 2:15.76 – a full four seconds better than his preliminary time.

Escarlata Bernard Gonzalez chopped nearly two seconds off her 200 butterfly meet record with a time of 2:11.99. Previously, Gonzalez had notched a 2:13.53 in 2006.

Other title winners included Javiera Salcedo in the women's 200 breast (2:34.85), Aschwin Wildeboer Faber in the men's 200 backstroke (2:03.57), Erika Villaecija in the women's 800 free (8:54.55) and Javier Nunez in the men's 1500 free (15:36.40).
