Pair of Meet Records Fall at Speedo Champions Series in Federal Way

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 14. DAY one of the Speedo Champions Series is complete at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

Two record-breaking swims in the men's 1000 free and the men's 800 free relay occurred during the first night of action. Carter Griffin, DU Hilltoppers, CO, pulled down a 9:02.27 in the men's 1000 free, besting David Pursley's former sectional record by 5.15 seconds (9:07.42). Martin Wallace, Jeffco Hurricane, CO placed second with a time of 9:10.20. Peter Kotson, Helena Lions Swimming Team, MT rounded out the top finishers with a time of 9:12.83.

In the women's 1000 free Christine Jennings, RallySport Aquatic, CO (9:48.21) threw down the gauntlet in heat 4 of 11 with a time that was never matched. Amanda Richery, Boulder Swimming, CO (9:54.32) and Lauren Abruzzo, DU Hilltoppers, CO (9:56.90) battled it out in the final heat.

In the 800 free relays, the men's King Aquatic Team, PN of Thane Maudslien, Logan Rysemus, Donald “Sascha” Stipe, and Tommy Thach clocked in at 6:40.58 and breaking Tualatin Hills' former record of 6:42.14. Kamehameha Swim, HI (Austin Hirstein, Stack, Jacob Urbabano, Kale Ai) held the second spot with 6:42.93. Tualatin Hills, OR (Scott Metzsch, Cameraon Stitt, Jonathan Zoucha, Liam Metzsch) rounded out the field at 6:44.18.

On the women's side the Missy Franklin-led Colorado Stars, CO (Madison Dirks, Colleen Wixted, Lindsay Painton, Missy Franklin) bested the competition with a time of 7:17.70. Franklin split a time of 1:42.33 in what is her final sectional meet as a Colorado Star before heading to UC-Berkeley next year. Tualatin Hills, OR (Sara Metzsch, Grace Carlson, Michelle Cefal, Blaise Wittenauer-Lee) hit the wall at 7:19.55 and Jeffco Hurricanes, CO (Erin Metzger, Abigail Houch, Kamryn Holland, Lexie Malazdrewicz) finished third at 7:23.60.
