Pair of French National Records Fall in Day One of French Short Course Championships

ISTRES, France, December 1. DAY one of the French Short Course National Championships concluded with a pair of national records as well as four other championship meet standards at the event held in Istres, France. Eshter Baron and Laure Manaudou each provided the hottest fireworks with national records in the 200 back and the 100 IM, respectively.

Women's 50 Freestyle
Alena Popchanka took home gold in the sprint free event with a 25.13 to out-touch Malia Metella's runner-up clocking of 25.16. Elsa N'Guessan pocketed bronze in 25.44.

Men's 50 Freestyle
Alain Bernard blitzed the championship heat on the men's side with a 21.64 for the victory. Meanwhile, Fred Bousquet, the European, National and Meet record holder, finished second in 21.83. Salim Iles rounded out the podium in 21.95.

Women's 800 Freestyle
Laure Manaudou lowered her own meet record by claiming the 800 free crown in 8:18.47. That effort surpassed the 8:18.58 she set on Dec. 2, 2005.

Sophie Huber grabbed silver in 8:24.64, while Charlene Neufcoeur took third in 8:28.90.

Men's 1500 Freestyle
A pair of swimmers cleared the meet standard, but Nicole Rostoucher came out on top by touching in 14:51.52. Anthony Pannier finished second in 14:53.66 as both erased the 14:58.50 previously set by Rostoucher on Dec. 2, 2005. Guy Noel Schmitt hit the wall third in 15:03.34.

Women's 200 Backstroke
Esther Baron edged her own national record in the 200 back to triumph in 2:06.51. That performance shaved time off the 2:06.82 Baron posted on Nov. 12, 2005.

Meanwhile, Laure Manaudou picked up second place in 2:08.14, while Alexiane Castel clocked a third-place 2:10.42.

Men's 200 Backstroke
Benjamin Stasiulis knocked chunks off his meet record in the 200 back when he turned in a 1:54.48 to win the national title. That time eclipsed the 1:57.57 he set on Dec. 2, 2005. In other action, Pierre Roger garnered silver in 1:55.88, while Simon Dufour took bronze in 1:57.54.

Women's 100 Breaststroke
Meet records kept falling like the snow as Elena Bogomazova wiped out Kirsty Balfour's meet record of 1:07.95 set on Dec. 2, 2005. In the end, Bogomazova stopped the clock in 1:07.38, while Anne Sophie Le Paranthoen placed second in 1:08.33. Camille Muffat closed out the top three in 1:09.08.

Men's 100 Breaststroke
Hugues Duboscq hit the wall in 59.35 to win the men's 100 breast, while Marc Lafosse placed second in 1:00.67. James Gibson took third in 1:00.93.

Women's 100 Butterfly
Aurore Mongel went sub-one-minute to win the women's 100 fly in 59.35. Meanwhile, Sophie De Ronchi took silver in 1:00.11, while Gabriella Fagundez wound up with bronze in 1:00.30.

Men's 100 Butterfly
Amaury Leveaux picked up the men's 100 fly crown in 52.40, beating out Fred Bousquet, who went 53.06 for silver. Christophe Lebon closed out the top three with a third-place 53.28.

Women's 100 IM
Laure Manaudou posted the second national record of the day with a 1:01.42 clocking in the 100 IM. That time cleared the 1:01.87 set by Sophie De Ronchi on April 6, 2006 in Shanghai.

In other action, Camille Muffat took second in 1:01.44, while Cylia Vabre finished third in 1:02.85.

Men's 100 IM
Christophe Soulier completed the day with gold in the 100 IM after touching in 55.61. Hugues Duboscq took second in 56.34, while Jonathan Massacand placed third in 57.20.
