The National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association handed out prestigious Scholar Team awards to 248 high school aquatic sports teams in 32 states for high marks in the classroom and excellent participation in the pool.

The organization ranks teams based on gold, silver or bronze award status. The placing of each team is determined by the average GPA earned by at least 12 athletes on the team. Gold award teams earn at least a 3.75 GPA, while silver award teams score 3.5-3.749 GPA. The bronze award ranking is for teams whose GPA falls between 3.2 and 3.499.

Among boys teams, the privately-run Pace Academy in Atlanta earned the highest grade point average with a 3.861. Six other schools earned GPAs higher than 3.8, based on submissions to NISCA via online applications, with 14 squads named as gold award teams. Texas put three schools in the gold award rankings (Southlake Carroll, Clear Creek and McAllen Memorial) while two schools – Dublin Jerome and Sylvania Southview – gave Ohio some prestige this past year.

Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, N.C., was named the top girls team in the country with a 3.962 GPA. The public school beat out six other schools in five states that also earned GPAs above 3.9 for the right to call themselves the smartest high school swim team in the country.

An astounding 54 girls teams were awarded the Gold Award status. Five schools from Wisconsin made the gold award team, with two more from the Badger State placing in the Silver Award category and one more named as a Bronze Award team.

Pace Academy was one of six schools to earn Gold Award status for its boys and girls teams. DuPont Manual, Southlake Carroll, Clear Creek, Kennesaw Mountain and New Trier also doubled up in the top ranings.

Michigan put the most schools on both lists with 29 total. Pennsylvania, Ohio and Wisconsin tied for second with 20 schools each.
