Pac-12 Men’s Championship Day 2: Lynch, Cal Sprint Ahead

Cal used a strong finish and quick sprinting to take the lead after Day 2 of the Pac-12 Men’s Championships.

The Golden Bears placed four in the 50 freestyle final, including champion Justin Lynch. That quartet came right back after a short break and won the 200 freestyle relay to close the evening.

Cal leads with 379 points. Stanford is second at 361, followed by USC (245), Arizona State (185), Utah (139) and Arizona (127).

DAY 2 RESULTS

Order of events

500 Free

Stanford had five in the final for the 500 free and picked up some big points to start the second night of finals.

Grant Shoults won the 500 free in 4:13.70, holding off Cal’s Sean Grieshop by nearly a second (4:14.44).

Stanford’s Liam Egan, who had the top seed in prelims, finished third (4:16.36), while teammates Matthew Hirschberger (4:16.60), Johann Calloni (4:16.85) and James Murphy (4:17.46) went 5-6-7 for the Cardinal.

Cal’s Nick Norman took fourth (4:16.41). Arizona’s Brendan Meyer took eighth (4:18.70).

200 IM

Stanford made it two-for-two to start Thursday’s finals as Abrahm DeVine dropped nearly three seconds from his prelims time to win the 200 IM in 1:41.17.

It was a final that was all Stanford and Cal swimmers.

Cal’s Andrew Seliskar (1:41.85) and Matthew Josa (1:42.35) went 2-3 for the Golden Bears.

Stanford’s Curtis Ogren finished fourth (1:44.03), followed by Cal’s Trenton Julian (1:44.04) and Michael Thomas (1:44.62). Stanford’s Alex Liang (1:45.10) and Jack Walsh (1:45.55) finished 7-8.

50 Free

Cal ended Stanford’s streak of victories to start the night in the 50 free as Justin Lynch surged to the title in 19.00 as Cal went 1-3-5-6.

He finished five hundredths ahead of USC’s Santo Condorelli (19.05) and nine hundredths ahead of teammate Pawel Sendyk (19:09).

Arizona’s Chatham Dobbs took fourth (19.12) ahead of Cal’s Michael Jensen (19.19) and Ryan Hoffer (19.25).

USC’s Dylan Carter was seventh (19.40) and Stanford’s Alberto Mestre was eighth (19.61).

200 Free Relay

The Cal sprinters continued their roll, winning the 200 free relay to close Day 2.

Lynch, Sendyk, Hoffer and Jensen were all in the final of the 50 free and came back to win the event in 1:15.78.

USC was second (1:15.78), followed by Stanford (1:16.69).
