Pac-10 Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships: Stanford Holds Early Lead

FEDERAL WAY, WA – Stanford got off to a strong start in its bid for a 14th-straight Pac-10 Women’s Swimming Championship by jumping out to big lead scoring 485 points on the first day of the three-day competition at the Weyerhaeuser/King County Aquatic Center. California is in second with 345 points.

Stanford was led by Catherine Fox who won the 50-freestyle with a time of 22.81. It is the second straight year she has finished first at the Pac-10 in the 50-free, sharing last year’s title with teammate, Siobahn Cropper who finished this year’s event in seventh place, touching the wall in 23.61. Cal’s Karen Campbell took second in the 50-free with a 22.98. Stanford also shattered its own meet record set last year in the 400-yard medley relay by turning in a 3:36.30.

California senior Marylyn Chiang sparked the fifth-ranked Bears with by winning the 200-yard individual medley in record time. The time of 1:58.25 was a season-best by over two seconds. Chiang was also part of the Cal team that won the 200-freestyle relay.
