Pac 10 Showdowns and Conference Championships Highlight Weekend

BOULDER, Colorado, February 13. IT was a busy weekend in the pool, as several teams concluded their seasons at their respective conference championship meets. Meanwhile, a handful of Pac 10 swimmers threw down some impressive times heading into their championship season. Here's a look at some highlights from the weekend.

Wayne State swept both the men's and women's titles at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Wayne State's Andrey Seryy was voted GLIAC Swimmer of the Year, and took home three titles from the meet, winning the 50 free (19.61), 100 free (44.35) and 200 free (1:39.01). Catherine Leix and Ana Gonzalez Pena also earned victories in two events apiece for Wayne State, as Leix claimed titles in the 500 free (4:58.60) and 1650 free (17:16.98) and Gonzalez Pena won the 100 breast (1:02.97) and 200 breast (2:16.60).

At the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, the Denison men and women each won their third consecutive conference titles. Ksenia Golovkina and Al Weik of Denison were named Women's and Men's Swimmer of the Year, and each took home wins in two events. Golovkina posted A-cut times to win both the 100 breast (1:02.91) and 200 breast (2:16.40), while Weik was victorious in the 500 free (4:30.18) and 1650 free (15:32.02).

The Incarnate Word men and women swept the team titles at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, held in Grand Junction, Colo. Casey Hurrell-Zitelman of Incarnate Word cruised to victories in the 200 IM (2:01.53), 400 IM (4:20.02) and 200 breast (2:18.56). Grand Canyon University's Inha Kotsur owned the distance free events, taking first in the 500 free (5:01.72), 1000 free (10:18.50) and 1650 free (17:20.21). Conrado Chede and Nikita Belousov of Incarnate Word were named Co-Swimmers of the Meet, while Chede was also named Swimmer of the Year. Chede posted wins in the 500 free (4:37.68), 1000 free (9:25.04) and 1650 free (15:59.79) and Belousov took home titles in the 100 back (50.04), 200 back (1:49.61) and 200 IM (1:51.78).

In dual meet action, fourth-ranked Cal upset top-ranked Stanford in Berkeley on Saturday, ending the Cardinal's 33-meet win streak in duals against Cal. Caitlin Leverenz posted sizzling times in both breaststrokes, touching in 1:00.26 in the 100 and 2:09.45 in the 200. She also swam a quick 1:56.95 to win the 200 IM. Amanda Sims (200 fly, 1:56.25; 100 fly, 52.58) and Liv Jensen (50 free, 22.22; 100 free, 48.99) also had strong outings for the Golden Bears.

Arizona bested Arizona State in Tucson in coach Frank Busch's final home meet. Alyssa Anderson claimed victories in the 200 fly (1:57.59), 500 free (4:50.19) and 200 IM (2:02.51) for the Arizona women, while A.J. Tipton (200 free, 1:39.43; 500 free, 4:27.87) and Kelley Wyman (50 free, 20.22; 100 free, 44.79) won two events apiece for the Wildcat men.

In another Pac 10 showdown, Southern California came out on top against cross-town rival UCLA on Saturday. Kasey Carlson (100 breast, 1:00.55), Lyndsay DePaul (200 fly, 1:52.79), Presley Bard (200 back, 1:54.64), Jessica Schmitt (200 breast, 2:09.01), Haley Anderson (500 free, 4:40.98), Katinka Hosszu (100 fly, 52.33) and Stina Gardell (400 IM, 4:03.89) all had standout swims for the Trojans.
