Oregon High School State Championships

MT. HOOD, Oregon, February 25. THE Oregon High School State Championships took place Friday, February 18 and Saturday, February 19 on the campus of the Mt. Hood Community College.

4A/3A/2A/1A Girls Results
Taft's Aly Viles, Cascade Christian's Breanna Sapienza, and Philomath's Annette Marinello all brought home two victories from Mt. Hood. Viles set new state records along with both of her victories. First, she won the 200 free in a record time of 1:50.82 and then the 100 free in 50.88. Marinello, meanwhile claimed first place in both the 200 IM (2:13.45) and 100 breast (1:08.29). Finally, Sapienza took the 50 free in 24.74 and then in the very next event, won the 100 fly in 56.39.

Two Sweet Home swimmers, Sami Webb and Naomi Gunselman, won an event each. Webb grabbed first in the 500 free (5:36.36), while Gunselman won the 100 back (1:03.34). Despite not winning any individual events, Phoenix won all three relays on their way to the team title. Gabe Deen, Olivia Sanchez, Alyse Darnall, and Marie Kempf won the 200 medley relay title in 1:59.95, while Kempf, Arin Fitch, Kylee Burks, and Deen took the top spot in the 200 medley relay (1:46.97). Burks, Kempf, Sanchez, and Darnall completed the sweep of relays in the 400 free, which they won in 3:57.76.

Phoenix won a clear victory with 57 points, while Henley beat Taft for second place by one point, 35 to 34.

4A/3A/2A/1A Boys Results
North Bend's Kevin Waller and Corbett's Colin Eaton both scored two individual wins. Waller won the 200 free in 1:42.11, establishing a new State record in the event. He also won the 500 free in 4:35.91, just shy of the state record of 4:35.26 he established in prelims. Meanwhile, Eaton took wins in both the 50 (20.97) and 100 free (46.42). In prelims, he established new state records in both events: 20.89 in the 50 and 46.16 in the 100. Additionally, Cascade Christian's Aaron Ghilgleri set an individual state record of 49.74 to win the 100 fly, while Junction City's Tony Vickery set the 100 breast state record of 58.61 in prelims before winning the finale in 58.69.

Corbett's Isaac Hewitt won the 100 back in 52.26, while Sweet Home's Zachary Pearce finished first in the 200 IM (1:58.34). Gravy Gunselmann, Alex Stupin, Don Rockstead, and Pearce won the 200 free relay for Sweet Home in 1:32.40. Newport's Austin Turner, Tom Graves, Clayton Jacobson, and Kellen Wood took the 200 medley relay in 1:42.11, and Cottage Grove's Gavin Nash, Sam Miller, Tyler Buckman, and Kyle Fringer earned first in the 400 free relay in 3:18.52, establishing a new State record.

In a very tight team race, North Bend edged Cottage Grove by just two points for the overall title, 45 to 43. Just two points back, Newport and Sweet Home tied for third with 41, just ahead of Corbett Charter (40).

5A Girls Results
Crescent Valley won four individual events and two relays on the way to the overall title. Lauren Allen doubled with wins in the 200 (1:53.66) and 100 free (53.16), while Erika Twenge won back-to-back victories in the 50 free (25.03) and 100 fly (59.81). Veronica Twenge, Meredith Wells, Erika Twenge, and Erin Schoper finished first in the 200 medley relay in 1:54.01, while Schoper, Dana Buck, Allen, and Wells beat the pack in the 400 free relay in 3:45.18.

Corvallis' Jessie James put on a show of her own, setting State records in two events. First, she posted a 2:04.99 in the 200 IM, and she repeated the feat in the 500 free, clocking 4:54.82. Erika Weiler, Kaih Gourley, and Lindsay Pfeifer joined James on the winning 200 free relay (1:42.25). Additionally, Summit's Madi Brewer won the 100 back (59.83), while Madison's Makila Schuck touched first in the 100 breast (1:07.56).

Crescent Valley cruised to the overall win with 78 points, while Corvallis (43) and Summit (37) completed the top three.

5A Boys Results
Summit's Chris Nyaradi and Mountain View's Brandon Deckard both walked away with two event victories. Nyaradi won the 200 (1:45.75) and 500 free (4:43.97), while Deckard won the 100 back (52.23) and set a State record of 1:54.10 in the 200 IM. Corvallis's Logan Parker also set a State record, posting a top mark of 21.43 in the 50 free. Josiah Wai, Parker, Ian Campbell, and Joe Cihak took the victory in the 200 free relay in 1:30.06, and Campbell, Parker, Brandon Shreeve, and Joe Cihak cruised in the 400 free relay, clocking 3:16.00.

Springfield's Carlos Hunnicutt won the 100 fly in 51.76, while Ben's Doug Steinhauff took first in the 100 free (47.08). North Eugene's Cameron Lindsey touched ahead of the pack in the 100 breast (59.83). Finally, Cleveland's team of Sam Donohue, Matt Hwee, Brandon Risley, and Steven Soo claimed the 200 free relay in 1:41.28.

Corvallis cruised to the team title with 62 points, defeating second-place Cleveland (37) and third-place South Albany (33).

6A Girls Results
Roseburg's Kaylin Bing won two individual events and set a pair of state records. In the 50 free prelims, she posted a record time of 22.83, and she won the finale in 22.86. She also set a record of 50.08 in winning the 100 free. Southridge's Taylor Lakey also doubled, winning the 200 free (1:53.46) and 100 fly (56.57). Sarah Braun, Jessica Li, and Amber Chase joined Lakey on Southridge's victorious 200 medley relay which clocked 1:49.17.

South Medford's Sarah Reierson won the 200 IM (2:07.03), while Tualatin's Alyssa Fuji took first in the 500 free (5:06.03). Lakeridge's Amy Wiley won the 100 breast (1:04.18), and Newberg swept the freestyle relays; Alysha Bush, Cassie Beecher, Meghan O'Halloran, and Catherine Mays took both the 200 (1:39.00) and 400 free relay (3:36.15).

Jesuit's Megan McCarroll won the 100 back (56.99), leading Jesuit to a comfortable win with 183 points. Meanwhile, Southridge posted 118 points to edge Newberg (110).

6A Boys Results
Aloha's Neil O'Halloran and Lincoln's Carson Brindle earned two individual wins each. O'Halloran set a State record of 48.72 in the 100 fly and also won the 200 free in 1:40.30. Briddle took the top spot in the 50 (21.17) and 100 free (46.07), and joined Eric Chang, Andre DeNegri, and Daniel He on his team's victorious 200 free relay (1:28.27).

Lakeridge's Andrew Heymann won the 200 IM (1:52.80), while Sunset's Cameron Stitt grabbed first in the 500 free (4:36.93). Hillsboro Aaron Young took the 100 back (50.56) and Forest Grove's Gabe Rooker the 100 breast (57.02) to round out the individual victories. Grant's Will Tyrrell, Kevin Wallin, Max Bley-Male, and Henry Fellows set a State record of 1:36.05 to take the 200 medley relay, while Lake Oswego's Luke Marshall, Alex Lyons, Kevin O'Leary, and Santo Condorelli finished first in the 400 free relay (3:13.73).

Sunset won a tight victory with 139 points, defeating Grant (125) and Lake Oswego (122).
