One World, Eight National Masters Records Fall at New England Short Course Champs

WALTHAM, Mass., Dec. 12. One world record and eight USMS national marks were broken at the New England Masters Short Course Meters Championship, held December 9-10 at Bentley College, in Waltham MA.

Jacki Hirsty, 48, set the sole world mark when she clocked 28.06 seconds for the 50 meter freestyle for women 45-49. The old record was 28.11, set by Laura val in 1996.

Andrea Hill set a USMS mark in the 200m breaststroke for women 25-29. Her 2:39.06 erased Wenke Hansen's 2:39.62 set two years ago.

The remaining national marks were all set by relay teams.
* The New England Masters men's 400m free relay (160-199) team of Fred Schlicher, Stuart Cromarty,
Rob Carr, and Kevin Stapleton clocked 3:43.35. The old record, held by DCAC was 3:46.15.

* The New England Masters men's 800m free relay
(76-99) team of Greg Wriede, Richard Bell, Thomas Stockl and Brian Fehlau went 8:40.24. The old mark was 8:56.41 held by Empire State.

* The New England Masters men's 800m free relay
(160-199) team of Kevin Stapleton, Fred Schlicher,
Brian Casey and Stuart Cromarty swam an impressive 8:18.71. The old record, held by Minnesota, was 8:25.47.

* The New England Masters mixed 400m free relay
(76-99) team of Brian Fehlau, Leslie Allen, Michele Hackmer and Greg Wriede touched in 3:58.40, breaking the four-minute barrier as well as the old record of 4:05.70 set by Santa Barbara.

* The New England Masters mixed 400m medley relay (100-119) team of Michele Hackmer, Greg Wriede,
Stuart Cromarty and Emily Wang went 4:18.94, chopping over seven seconds off the old mark of 4:25.03 held by the New England Masters-Cambridge team.

* The New England Masters mixed 400m medley relay (120-159) team of Kari Anderson, Brian Felhau,
Rob Carr and Roma Kusznir swam 4:18.78. Ojai-Santa Barbara owned the old mark, 4:20.53.
