On Premium Swimming World Radio: Ageless Masters Swimmer Jurgen Schmidt Talks About Nationals

PHOENIX, Arizona, June 5. JURGEN Schmidt started competing in Masters swimming 35 years ago. In his first nationals, he swam the 1500 free against Doc Counsilman. In an interview on Swimming World Radio that appears on page 31 of the June issue of Swimming World Magazine, Schmidt talks about that first nationals, and how he has been mostly self-taught, absorbing knowledge from books, video tapes, coaches and other swimmers.

Schmidt talks about the motivation and inspiration he gets from training partner Frank Piemme, who creates some difficult workouts for him as the two train for the Masters long-distance events. One set he mentions is 20 x 100 on 2:00, an interval that Schmidt said is often cut down by Piemme.

"If it were not for him, I wouldn't do as well as I do," he said.

Of the four records Schmidt set at nationals, he said he's more surprised with his time in the 100 IM.

"My butterfly felt great," he said. "My times have been coming down all year."
