Olympians Highlight Asphalt Green’s Free Swim Meet for New York Kids

NEW YORK, April 19. SOME of the biggest names in Olympic swimming and diving are the headliners at
Asphalt Green's Seventh Annual Big Swim, to be held on Saturday, April 20th and Monday, April 22nd, at the Asphalt Green pool in New York.

Among the Olympians who have indicated they are attending are swimmers Rowdy Gaines, Dr. Ron Karnaugh, and David Fox, and divers Mary Ellen Clark and Kent Ferguson.

According to Michele Murdock, Asphalt Green spokeswoman, more than 1,000 children will compete in the meet tomorrow. The Olympians will present awards to the winners and will b available to have photos taken with all the children.

On Monday, April 22nd, the Olympians will attend the Big Swim Benefit. The benefit raises funds for Asphalt Green's waterproofing program, a partnership with the New York City public schools that teaches low-income children to swim. Since 1993, more than 10,000 kids have learned to swim under this program.

Dr. Karnaugh, a 1992 Olympian who is still competing today, commented: "This is a great opportunity for us to give back to the community and take part in a very worthy event. Who knows? Our presence at Asphalt Green this weekend may inspire some of these kids to make the 2012 Olympic team. More importantly, all of these children are engaging in a healthy, fun, positive activity."
