Olympians and National Teamers Dot Rosters at Open Championship

Houston, TX, October 27, 2004—USA Water Polo has announced that the 2004 USA Water Polo Men’s Open Championship, slated to be held in Houston, Texas, October 29-31 at the University of Houston, will feature several former Olympic and National Team players competing for some of the nation’s top club teams.

New York Athletic Club, last year’s Men’s Open title winner, will boast a trio of players with significant National Team experience. Two-meter man Sean Kern (Honolulu, HI/UCLA) added to a sensational collegiate career—four-time All-American and two-time Peter J. Cutino Award winner—with a trip to Sydney as part of the U.S. Olympic Team in 2000. Merrill Moses (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/Pepperdine) is an accomplished goalkeeper with bundles of international experience. Athletic, agile and animated, Moses is considered to be one of the top players in the world at his position. Misha Kloshkov has been on the Kazakhstan National Team since 2002. He was named to Kazakhstan’s Olympic Team in 2004, but was forced to sit out due to injury. All three players are standouts in the USA Water Polo Premier League.

The Olympic Club of San Francisco features a pair of former National Teamers in Jon Samuels and Spencer Dornin (Laguna Beach, CA/Cal Berkeley). Samuels is a big, physical player in the hole with good scoring ability, while Dornin is a quick lefthander with a deadly outside shot.

The rest of the field will include many of the best collegiate and former collegiate players in the country.

The three-day tournament, one only three major events for USA Water Polo this fall, begins on Friday, October 29 and will wrap up with the championship at 3:30 p.m. on Halloween (October 31) afternoon.
