Oklahoma High School Champs: Edmond Memorial Takes Girls’ Crown, Jenks Wins Boys’

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — EDMOND MEMORIAL, with its third-consecutive state championship, and Jenks, with its sixth-straight win, were the kingpins for girls and boys at this year's Oklahoma state High School Swimming Championships.

The meet was held the final weekend of February at the Oklahoma City Community College Pool — also site of this year's National Junior CoIllege Athletic Assn. Championships.

GIRLS' EVENTS
Coached by veteran mentor Steve Riggs, one of the state's leading high school and age group coaches, Edmond Memorial scored 357 points to win the girls' title going away over runners-up Jenks. Third was Norman North (192.5).

Edmond won six events en route to the title, and its 357-point total was second-highest in the meet's history — surpassed only by (you guessed it!) the 377.5 total Riggs' girls scored last year. Among the Edmond individual winners were Bobbi Snider (100 free), Robin Herndon (100 back), Megan Howell (100 breast-200 IM). Edmond also won the 200 medley-200 free relays, and in the former set a state record with its 1:51.20 clocking.

The meet's other double winner was Tulsa Union senior Whitney Lynn , who scored fine 1:51.18-4:53.84 200-500 free victories — with the latter a state record. Lynn goes out in style, having swept both distances the last two seasons.

Howell defended her 200 IM from 2000 as did teammate Herndon in the 100 back, and the duo finished one-two in the IM with only .04 separating first from second.

Riggs said this year's Edmonds team was stronger in quality than last season's but did not have as much depth as the high-scoring 2000 squad. He added: "The [Oklahoma] girls' meet was much faster than it has been in many years." As for four in-a-row in '02, Riggs says he's "not in the prediction business."
However, with the bulk of his squad back next season, including all event winners, Edmond will be in a strong position to keep its championship streak intact.

BOYS' EVENTS
Led by super senior sprinter Dan Blanchard, Jenks (342) was an easy 120+-point victor over Bartlesville (221) for its sixth-straight boys' crown, with Edmond (218) a close third.

Blanchard won the 200 free and was runner-up in the 100 back, but saved his record-setting for the relays. He blasted the opening leg of the 200 free in 20.67, becoming the first Oklahoma prepster under 21.0, then came back to lead off the 400 free in a quick 45.46.

His fast leadoff on the 200 free relay also resulted in Jenks setting a state record with its 1:26.08 victory.

The only boys' doubler was Broken Arrow's Topher Rowenhorst, who scored wins in the 50 (21.67) and 100 frees (47.86).

Aside from Blanchard, Jenks' "big gun" was Charles Lebeau, who scored a win in the 200 IM and was second in the 100 fly.

Heritage Hall's Andy Bockus scored a win in the 500 free and was third in the 200 free, while Bartles-ville's Aaron Inkrott was first in the 100 fly, third in the 100 back.
