Ohlgren Posts Double at Charlotte UltraSwim

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, June 8. THE second night of the Charlotte UltraSwim, a stop on the United States Swimming Grand Prix Circuit, was full of quality action, with Ava Ohlgren acting as the headline performer. The 19-year-old picked up a pair of victories, touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle and 400 individual medley.

Opening the night, Ohlgren turned in a time of 2:00.65 for a triumph in the 200 freestyle. Trailing Mary DeScenza at the 100-meter mark, Ohlgren surged on the final two laps to place ahead of Emily Kukors (2:01.08) and DeScenza (2:01.16). As for the 400 I.M., Ohlgren secured a comfortable win with her effort of 4:44.82, supplying a one-plus second decision of Caitlin Leverenz (4:46.00).

Although DeScenza and Leverenz couldn't get the best of Ohlgren, they still walked away with wins at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Leverenz defeated the competition in the 100 breaststroke, thanks to a time of 1:10.31. She was followed in 1:11.31 by Abby MacGregor. As for DeScenza, she covered the 100 butterfly in 1:00.52.

The boys from Longhorn Aquatics battled it out in the 200 freestyle with David Walters edging Ricky Berens, 1:49.48 to 1:49.59. Dominik Miechtry also checked in with a sub-1:50 performance, as he navigated the race in 1:49.83. In the 100 breaststroke, Mark Gangloff was timed in 1:01.73, easily faster than the 1:02.91 of Scott Usher.

Other wins on the male side were turned in by Patrick O'Neil in the 100 butterfly (54.11) and Bradley Ally in the 400 individual medley (4:24.40). Alexei Puninski was second in the fly (54.22) and Berens was third (54.27). Tyler Harris was the second-place finisher in the distance medley with a mark of 4:27.76.
