Ohio University Swimmers Stavreska and Peterson to Compete at World Championships

ATHENS, OH, October 6. SENIOR Irena Stavreska and freshman Ilse Peterson will compete against the best the sport has to offer this weekend when they participate in the FINA World Swimming Championships at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., announced the university recently.

Stavreska will represent Macedonia in the 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle. She qualified by winning both events at the Macedonian National Championships this past summer. The Struga native is a three-year letterwinner for the Bobcats and was a member of the Mid-American Conference champion 200 freestyle relay team.

Ilse Peterson is a newcomer to the Ohio program and will compete for South Africa in five events. The Johannesburg native qualified with a second place finish in the 200 freestyle at the South African National Swimming Championships and will also participate in the 50 and 100 freestyle events as well as the 400 and 800 freestyle relays.

The World Swimming Championships will get underway at Conseco Fieldhouse, home of the NBA's Pacers and WNBA's Fever, this Thursday, Oct. 7, and conclude on Monday, Oct. 11. Among the many American swimmers to compete are Michael Phelps, Amanda Beard, Ian Crocker, and Lindsay Benko.

Considered one of the premier athletic venues in the Midwest, Conseco Fieldhouse employed between 60 and 100 workers around the clock for eight-straight days to construct a 25-meter competition pool along with a warm-up pool.

ESPN 2 will carry same-day coverage of the events from Indianapolis
Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday and will air action live Monday night.
