Ohio State Diving Wins 2 at USA Diving Junior Nationals

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, August 5. WITH two years to go until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, America’s future Olympic hopefuls were competing for junior national titles as the USA Diving Junior National Championships continuedTuesday at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. Duke Diving’s Jordan Windle (Morrisville, N.C.) won his second title of the championships, pairing with Cameron Thatcher (Powell, Ohio) of the Ohio State Dive Club for gold in boys’ 14-18 synchronized 3-meter, while Thatcher’s club teammate Estee Pryor (New Albany, Ohio) and North Carolina Diving’s Elisabeth Dawson (Durham, N.C.) won girls’ 14-18 synchronized 3-meter.  GC Diving’s Hailey Hernandez(Southlake, Texas) and Pine Crest’s  Kevin Mendez (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) won 11-and-under platform titles.

Windle, who had already won the 14-18 boys’ synchronized platform title on Monday, and Thatcher paired for 304.95 points to win Tuesday’s boys’ synchronized 3-meter competition. Henry Fusaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) of Clavadistas del Sol and Christopher Law (San Antonio, Texas) of Alamo Area Aquatics were second with 281.73 points, and Dominion Dive Club teammates Gregory Duncan (Vienna, Va.) and Benjamin Schiesl (Fairfax, Va.) took third at 266.04.

Pryor and Dawson finished with 281.19 points to take the girls’ 14-18 3-meter synchro title, with second place going to GC Diving teammates Lauren Crown (Southlake, Texas) and Mackenzie Willborn (Flower Mound, Texas) at 277.89. Indiana Diving Club teammates Sarah Bacon (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Brooke Schultz (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored 261.42 points for third.

Hernandez, who won the silver medal on 3-meter on Monday, won the girls’ 11-and-under platform in a close contest with 3-meter champion Remi Edvalson (Saratoga, Calif.). Hernandez came out ahead on platform, scoring 217.35 to Edvalson’s 215.65. Rose Bowl’s Alexandra Warshaw (Glendale, Calif.) was third with 205.70 points.

Mendez won his second career junior national title on platform, having also won gold on the event in 2013. A day after taking 1-meter silver, Mendez scored 219.45 points for the win on platform. GC Diving’s Jackson Miller (Southlake, Texas), the 1-meter champion on Monday, finished second with 214.15 points, and Montgomery Dive Club’s Maxwell Weinrich (Brookeville, Md.) took third with 199.55 points.

The USA Diving Junior National Championships run through August 9. In all, 28 junior national titles will be awarded throughout the championships. In addition, the 2014 FINA World Junior Championships team will be selected off results from the meet.
