Notre Dame Sweeps Michigan State

NOTRE DAME, Indiana, November 10. THE No. 17 Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team improved to 3-0 in dual meet action this season by topping Michigan State 165-75 on Friday evening in the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The Fighting Irish took first in10 of 13 events en route to the dominating victory. Meanwhile, the No. 20 Notre Dame women claimed a 69-point win (155.50-86.50) over Michigan State. The woman scored 185 points and won 10 of the 13 events.

On the men's side, senior co-captain Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western) notched wins in the 200-yard free and 200-yard butterfly for the Irish.

Also posting wins for Notre Dame were Louis Cavadini (50 free), Sam Stoner (1-meter diving), Andrew MacKay (200 back), Jay Vanden Berg (500 free), Michael Bulfin (3-meter diving) and Tyler Angelo (200 breast) along with the 400-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays.

The Irish had a much easier time with the Spartans this season after edging out a 122.5-120.5 victory last year in East Lansing, Mich. Notre Dame is 3-0 in dual meet action for the first time since the 2001-2002 campaign.

In women's action, the 400-yard medley relay team of Stacey Nedrud (Melbourne Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach), Julia Quinn (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), Keri Masterson (West Hempstead, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and Christa Riggins (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) won the first event of the afternoon in a time of 3:51.71.

Freshman Zeina Shanata (Gainesville, Fla./Bucholz) took home the win in 1,000-yard freestyle in her time of 10:23.31. Fellow freshman Megan Farrell (Hopkinton, Ma./Hopkinton) followed with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:51.78. Caroline Johnson (Springfield, Mo. Glendale) won the 50-yard freestyle. (23.92). Freshman Ashlee Edgell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Maderia) had 200-yard individual medley (2:06.03) victory for the first individual win of her career.

The Irish victory streak was momentarily snapped in the three-meter dive, only to senior Katie Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) win the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.16). The Carroll swim went down in the books as an exhibition victory though. Caroline Johnson followed with her second win of the afternoon, this time in the 100-yard butterfly (52.44). Senior Ann Barton (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) won her first individual title of the season in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.62). Freshman Lexie Shue (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) got in on the act with an exhibition 4:52.79 win in the 500-yard freestyle. Junior Natalie Burke (Cape Town, South Africa/Reddam House College) finished off the Irish winning ways in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.29).

The Fighting Irish women will have one more home meet this weekend against Pittsburgh at noon on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Rolfs Aquatic Center before hitting the road for the next few months.
