Notre Dame Prevails at Shamrock Invite

NOTRE DAME, Ind. January, 29. THE No. 19 Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team ended the 2005-06 dual meet season on a high note by taking the Shamrock Invitational on Saturday evening in the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The meet was scored as a quadruple dual meet and the Irish topped the four other squads. Notre Dame improved its record to 10-2 on the year by downing No. 22 Penn State 197-173, Missouri 226-144, Oakland 261-106 and Louisville 277-91. Saturday’s action featured a morning session and an evening session. The first session of the meet occurred on Friday evening.

The Irish collected a total of three victories on Saturday, with all of them occurring in the morning session. Senior co-captain Jamie Lutkus (Granger, Ind./Penn) won the 400-yard IM in a team season-best time of 4:00.30. Junior Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western) captured the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.86, while senior Tim Randolph (Crown Point, Ind./Merrillville) took the 100-yard breast in 56.41, which was another season-best time for the Irish, to give the Irish their ninth win out of the 20-event meet on the men’s side.

Lutkus and Randolph were among 10 Fighting Irish men’s swimmers making their final home appearance in the Rolfs Aquatic Center on Saturday evening. Joining that duo in the class of 2006 is Chris Barnes (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier), Doug Bauman (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), Patrick Davis (Clearwater, Fla./Jesuit), Tyler Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianium), Bryan Guarnier (Queensbury, N.Y./Glens Falls), Patrick Heffernan (Norcross, Ga./Norcross), Patrick O’Berry (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton) and Steve Shomberger (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland).

SATURDAY MORNING SESSION RECAP:

200-Yard Medley Relay: The Irish opened the day with a fourth-place finish as the team of Doug Bauman, Eric Swenson, Tim Kegelman and Tim Randolph clocked a time of 1:33.77. The four-man squad from Penn State took first in 1:31.23.

400-Yard IM: Notre Dame’s Jamie Lutkus won with a time of 4:00.30, which is the top time of the year for the Irish.

100-Yard Butterfly: Tim Kegelman clocked a second-place finish with a time of 49.75, while his Notre Dame teammate Louis Cavadini was right behind him in third with a season-best mark of 50.24. Oakland’s Chris Sullivan was the winner in 49.65.

200-Yard Freestyle: Notre Dame took three of the top-four spots as Ted Brown placed first in 1:40.86, while Brian Freeman was third (1:42.07) and Rob Seery fourth (1:42.40).

100-Yard Breaststroke: Notre Dame’s Tim Randolph established the team’s best time of the year as he claimed the victory in 56.41. Tim Kegelman placed fifth for the Irish in 58.30

100-Yard Backstroke: The top finisher for the Fighting Irish was Doug Bauman, who placed seventh in a time of 52.00. Penn State’s Shawn McLin captured the victory with a time of 50.15.

800-Yard Freestyle Relay: Notre Dame’s quartet of Louis Cavadini, Brian Freeman, Rob Seery and Ted Brown placed second in 6:47.15. Penn State’s four-man team won with a time of 6:45.36.

Three-Meter Diving: Freshman Michael Bulfin placed fourth with 315.70 points, while his sophomore teammate Sam Stoner was sixth with 295.15 points. Penn State’s Adam Pierce claimed the win with a 333.90 total.

SATURDAY EVENING SESSION RECAP:

1,650-Yard Freestyle: Notre Dame’s Jay Vanden Berg finished second in a season-best time of 15:40.95, yet was out-touched by Penn State’s David Kraft, who touched the wall in 15:40.55. The Irish also claimed spots three through five with Jace Hopper placing third in 15:55.70, Patrick Davis fourth in 15:59.58 and Rob Seery fifth in 16:00.00.

200-Yard Backstroke: Doug Bauman placed third for the Irish in a time of 1:50.63. Penn State’s Pat Schirk took first in 1:48.44.

100-Yard Freestyle: Junior Louis Cavadini was the top finisher for the Irish as he clocked in at fourth with a time of 46.29. Chris Sullivan from Oakland won in 45.19.

200-Yard Breaststroke: Notre Dame took two of the top-five spots with Daniel Rave placing second in 2:04.83 and Tyler Grenda in fifth with a time of 2:07.59. Vali Preda from Louisville took the win in a time of 2:03.74.

100-Yard Butterfly: The Fighting Irish had two more top-five finishers with Ted Brown taking third in 1:53.66 and Patrick Heffernan was fourth in 1:53.67. Penn State’s Tim Williams took the win in 1:51.36.

200-Yard Freestyle: In the final event of the meet, Notre Dame’s team of Louis Cavadini, Tim Randolph, Ted Brown and Tim Kegelman clocked a season-best time of 3:04.24. Penn State’s quartet took the win in 3:01.96.
