Northwestern Women Host ‘Breaststroke4BreastCancer’ Fundraiser

EVANSTON, Illinois, October 1. NORTHWESTERN women's swimming and diving will host an evening of music, fun and swimming at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, to raise money for breast cancer research. The Breaststroke4BreastCancer event will benefit the NorthShore Research Institute.

Northwestern swimmers will break into three relays to swim the breaststroke continuously for an hour as Breaststroke4BreastCancer's main activity. Members from other athletic teams, sororities and fraternities, university staff and community members have the option to form teams to compete alongside the Wildcats and the other organizations participating, though swimming for the full hour is not required! (Due to NCAA regulations, high school students are not able to participate.)

“Last summer, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer,” said junior Megan Goss, one of the co-organizers along with classmate Jackie Powell. “We were lucky that they caught it early and my mom now is cancer free. It made me very grateful for all the research that has been done. Jackie and I started talking about doing a fundraiser for breast cancer research, and we are excited to partner with NorthShore and keep all the funds local.”

Admission to spectate the event is free, but donations are strongly encouraged. The cost for NU students to participate in relays is $5, and for other community members it is $15. Organizations are encouraged to raise money individually. The organization completing the most laps (not including NU swimmers) will win a trophy and anyone who swims will earn a pink Northwestern swim cap.

The entry deadline for the event is Oct. 12, but individuals can make donations at any time at the Breaststroke4BreastCancer website. Individuals who are unable to attend but would like to donate are strongly encouraged to using the “Donate” button at the top of the home page. Testimonials also can be submitted at the site for inclusion in NU's blog about the event.

“Breast cancer affects everyone in some form,” Goss said.

The evening will feature lively music, an emcee to keep things entertaining and moving, and a pink bake sale. Zeta Tau Alpha sorority has partnered with the Wildcats to help run the event. For complete details, link to the Breaststroke4BreastCancer Official Home Page.
