Northwestern Wildcats Fire it up This Weekend

EVANSTON, Illinois, October 21. THIS Saturday, the Northwestern men welcome Texas A&M to the Norris Aquatics Center for a 1 p.m. dual meet, and on Sunday the men and women Wildcats host their annual NU Relays beginning at noon.

Returning to the lineup this year on the men’s side are Matt Grevers and Mike Alexandrov. Grevers was the 2005 NCAA champ in the 100 back and had an awesome summer, competing in the World University Games alongside Alexandrov who competed for Bulgaria.

"The linchpin of this team is the performance of Grevers and Alexandrov," coach Bob Groseth said. "They have shown they are top swimmers in the nation and big players internationally. We will experiment in different events during the year to explore their capabilities and see how well they will fare."

Returning for his sophomore season with five All-America honors to his name is Kyle Bubolz, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Bubolz set three Big Ten and five Northwestern records to go with his four Big Ten titles last season.

"We finished last season on a very high note, and because of that we have high expectations for this year," Groseth said. "An examination of our roster shows that 80 percent of this team are freshmen and sophomores, so the early part of the year will be ragged but we expect good results at the end."

The women may not fare as well as the men do, but are preparing for the challenge with a short roster of only 14 swimmers.

"We are excited this year because we definitely have strong talent returning and some new blood to infuse extra enthusiasm and potential," head coach Jimmy Tierney said. "This is one of the smallest teams I have ever had so our emphasis is more on quality, not quantity."

However, returning to the lineup is standout Andrea Hupman, a sophomore this year. She earned All-America honors in the 100 free, and set the school record in the 200 freestyle as a freshman. Hupman participated in the World University Games in Turkey this August, winning two gold medals with the U.S. 400 and 800 free relays.
