Northwestern Sets NCAA Record in 400 Medley Relay Win to Close Blazing First Day; Auburn Owns Lead Going Into Second Day

By Jason Marsteller

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 15. FINALLY, Northwestern picked up a strong anchor to go with the opening three legs of Matt Grevers (45.83), Mike Alexandrov (51.28) and Kyle Bubolz (44.95) when Bruno Barbic (42.34) decided to transfer to Northwestern from the University of Washington. The Wildcats closed out the race with an NCAA-record time of 3:04.40, which lowered the previous standard of 3:04.47 set by Texas in 2003. It also marked NU's first relay national title since 1933.

Meanwhile, Stanford's quartet of Hongzhe Sun, Paul Kornfeld, Jason Dunford and Ben Wildman-Tobriner, which touched second in 3:05.00, was disqualified for an early takeoff. That gave second to the Texas foursome of Tom Sacco (46.19), Tyler O'Halloran (52.18), Rick Berens (45.46) and Garrett Weber-Gale (41.86) in 3:05.66, while Auburn's squad of Scott Goodrich (47.27), David Maras (52.33), Alexei Puninski (45.46) and Cesar Cielo (41.03) finished third in 3:06.09.

Auburn owned the top team score with 187 points, while Arizona moved into second with 121 points. Texas stood third with 107 points, while Northwestern (106) and Florida (106) tied for fourth.
