Northern Iowa vs. Nebraska-Omaha

OMAHA, Nebraska, January 15. THE UNO swimming and diving team captured a 170-128 win on Saturday, defeating Northern Iowa at the HPER Swimming Pool.

The Mavs opened with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Amy Bechdolt, Maddie Hutt, Colleen Klaiber and Tiesha Scipio turned in a time of 1:50.21. Scipio also finished first in the 50 free (24.80) and was part of the Mavericks' winning 400 freestyle relay team, along with Cait Hopkins, Lucy Zamecnik and Kylie Hubbell, to swim to a time of 3:37.62.

Hopkins won a pair of events — the 200 freestyle (1:56.29) and the 100 freestyle (53.75), and Bechdolt swept the backstroke with times of 1:00.31 in the 100 and 2:13.58 in the 200. Hutt took both breaststroke events, taking first in the 100 (1:07.70) and the 200 (2:22.94).

Klaiber added a first-place showing in the 100 butterfly at 1:00.01, and Laura Kemp was the top performer in the 200 butterfly (2:15.12) and the 200 individual medley (2:13.45).

Amanda Schulte also came through in the 3-meter diving competition, earning a first-place score of 245.55.

"This was a great win for us today," Head Coach Todd Samland said. "It has been over a month since we have competed, and I was anxious to see how the team would preform against a quality program from UNI. I was impressed with how they stepped up and competed against a Division I program. It was also nice to have a diver back on our roster to pick up some points, as we haven't had a diver for five semesters, and Amanda provided that. It was great to have such a strong team effort."

The Mavericks return to the pool Jan. 21-22 at the Grinnell College Invite. Competition begins at 9 a.m. in Grinnell, Iowa.
