Northeastern & George Mason Win Top Honors At Orange Bowl Swimming Classic

KEY LARGO, Florida Keys. January 10. NORTHEASTERN University and George Mason University won top honors in women's and men's divisions respectively at the Orange Bowl Swimming Classic in the Florida Keys Saturday.

"After a week of training hard, I thought we did a great job of being up and competing," said Northeastern coach Roy Coates.

Coates' swimmers convincingly prevailed, finishing 121 points ahead of second-place Washington College.

George Mason, featuring Tom Koucheravy, one of the top freestyle swimmers in NCAA Division I, also won handily with 578 total points to Washington’s 390.

Koucheravy didn't swim in any individual freestyle swim events, but was part of the winning men's freestyle relay team that easily defeated St. Louis University by more than six seconds.

"To beat the competition is always a good thing," said George Mason coach Peter Ward.

Staged at the Jacobs Aquatics Center, the Classic occurred in the middle of the winter collegiate swim training season in the Keys. The sprint-style competition featured 24 different swimming events.
