Northeast-10 Conference Championships, Day Two

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, February 3. SOUTHERN Connecticut State University maintained their leads in both the men’s and women’s championships during the second day of competition at the 2012 Northeast-10 Championship Swimming and Diving meet in New Haven, Connecticut on the campus of So. Connecticut.

The final day of the three-day event will get underway tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. and will culminate with the championship finals tomorrow night at 6 p.m.

The second day of the three-day event saw six conference marks set, as records fell in the following men’s events: 100 yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard medley relay, and the 400-yard individual medley, and were also set in the women’s 100-yard butterfly and women’s 100-yard breaststroke.

Arguably, the most impressive performance of the night belonged to So. Connecticut’s Amanda Thomas,pictured, who shattered her own mark in the 100-yard butterfly with an NCAA “A”- Qualifying time of 54.82, bettering her previous mark by more than two seconds (57.09) which she set at last year’s championships.

With one day remaining in the championships, So. Connecticut still has a commanding lead on both the men’s and women’s sides. The Owls’ men’s team leads the second-place Golden Knights of The College of Saint Rose by 84 points, while the Owls’ women’s team holds a substantial 210 point lead over Bentley University.

So. Connecticut, once again, won a number of events in both men’s and women’s action on Friday night to add to their already-imposing lead.

Record-setters during the second day two were: Bentley’sJessica Hodsdon in the 100-yard breaststroke, as she finished the event in 1:04.08, Le Moyne College’s Drew Acquaviva who established a new mark in the 100-yard backstroke with his time of 50.28 breaking his mark of 50.44 from last year’s event, Saint Rose’s Vadim Yafayev in the 400-yard IM (4:00.58) as he also broke his mark of 4:01.34 from last year’s NE-10 Championships, So. Connecticut’s Austin Mizzell in winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.34, as he also bettered his mark from last year’s championship of 57.40.

The other record-breakers from Friday’s action were the So. Connecticut men’s 200-yard medley relay team set a new mark of 1:33.38, which was almost a second-and-a-half better then the mark they set in the event (1:34.75) at last year’s NE-10 Championships.

During the diving portion of day two action, Bentley’sMike Walsh won his second title in as many days, as he won the one-meter event with a score of 440.35. Yesterday, he won the three-meter event, giving him a sweep of the NE-10 titles in men’s diving.
