North Texas Relays

MANSFIELD, Texas, October 8. TCU's women's swimming team got its 2010-11 season underway Friday evening with a third-place finish at the North Texas Relays inside the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.

The Horned Frogs racked 86 team points in the event, which featured relays only. SMU claimed first-place honors with 118 points.

"We wanted to use this meet to try to find out best lineup heading into the conference season," TCU coach Richard Sybesma said. "I think we've now got a better indication of where we're at depth-wise."

Senior Maria Paula Alvarez brought the Frogs from third to first with her anchor 200-yard leg of the 500-yard ladder freestyle relay. She led TCU to a relay time of 4:33.07 for its only event win of the evening.

Joined by Parris Schoppa, Katie Scarsella and Ashley Bolin, Alvarez and the Frog team touched the wall ahead of second-place SMU in the event.

TCU also enjoyed success in the 3 x 100-breast relay. The Frog team of Michelle Fleming, Nikki Pappas and Megan Higginbotham placed second with a time of 3:22.16.

The 400-free relay team notched another second-place for TCU when Schoppa, Scarsella, Alvarez and Sabine Rasch touched the wall in 3:30.32.

The Frogs grabbed third place finishes in the 3 x 100-fly relay, the 4 x 200-free relay, the 4 x 100-medley relay and the 4 x 50-free relay.
