North Carolina vs. Georgia

ATHENS, Georgia, October 22. THE Georgia women's swimming and diving team won its 75th straight meet at Gabrielsen Natatorium on Saturday as the Lady Bulldogs dispatched North Carolina.

The Lady Bulldogs recorded a 177-112 victory over the Tar Heels to extend a winning streak that began Nov. 8, 1995. The school record for most consecutive home wins belongs to men's tennis, which won 76 in a row between 1968 and 1972. The Lady Bulldogs will have a chance to match the record on Nov. 16 when Emory visits.

"The women's streak is a real point of pride for our program," Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. "What I think is most impressive about it is the length of it. To be able to maintain this level of success over 16 years is a real testament to the swimmers and divers who've come through our program. No team wants to be the one to let it end. They all want their legacy to include keeping this streak alive."

On the men's side, the Bulldogs posted a 180.5-119.5 victory over North Carolina. Each Georgia squad improved to 2-0 on the season.

Melanie Margalis won three events to pace the Lady Bulldogs. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.70, the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.44 and the 400 individual medley in 4:09.73.

Wendy Trott, Kelsey Gaid, Maddie Locus and Lauren Harrington were double winners for the Lady Bulldogs. Trott claimed the 500 freestyle in 4:41.31 and the 1,000 freestyle in 9:46.03. Gaid won the 100 backstroke in 55.07 and the 200 backstroke in 1:59.07. Locus took the 50 freestyle in 22.95 and the 100 freestyle in 49.99. Harrington won the 100 butterfly in 54.14 and the 200 butterfly in 1:58.92.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay. The team of Kristen Shickora, Margalis, Harrington and Megan Romano stopped the clock in 1:41.31. Shannon Vreeland won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.33. Locus, Vreeland, Jessica Graber and Romano claimed the 400 freestyle relay in 3:20.38.

Nic Fink won twice to pace the Bulldogs, claiming the 100 breaststroke in 55.94 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:03.08.

The Bulldogs' 200 medley relay of Luke Upchurch, Fink, Doug Reynolds and Michael Arnold recorded a victorious time of 1:30.53. Will Freeman placed first in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:04.70. Jameson Hill touched in 1:37.71 to win the 200 freestyle. Jared Markham won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:46.82. Martin Grodzki claimed the 500 freestyle in 4:25.17. Reynolds won the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.79. Andrew Gemmell took the 400 individual medley in 3:54.53. The 400 freestyle relay team of Reynolds, Hill, John Simmons and Arnold tied for first at 3:01.10. Owen Blank won the 3-meter springboard with a score of 337.27.

"That was a hard fight for us today," Bauerle said of the men's meet. "UNC has gotten us the last couple years. They're a really good team, very well coached. (UNC coach) Rich DeSelm is one of the best in the country and he runs a really good program. We go back and forth with them. We swim well because of them and vice versa."

Georgia will visit Florida on Friday at 9:45 a.m.
