North Carolina Swimmers Bust Up State Records

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina. February, 13. THIS year the state record books were nearly wiped clean after three high school state championships over the past few weekends.

Division 1/2A started things off right erasing records in seven events. The girls from Cardinal Gibbons set a new state record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.30 and in the 200 free, 1:37.53. Melanie Roberts set a record in the 200 IM with a 2:02.96, sadly it wouldn't stand long. To her credit she set another in the 100 breast with a 1:03.02 for Cardinal Gibbons. Teresa Long of Raleigh Charter set two records one in the 50 free, 23.69, the other the 100, 51.46.

For Division 3 there was a little more of the same with two state records both of them for the men. Chip Peterson set a new state record in the 200 free that was quickly broken by Charlie Houchin from the 4A side. Their times were 1:40.89 and 1:37.95. The other was in the 100 back by Eugene Godsoe at 48.78 breaking Auburn standout Doug Van Wie's standard.

In the final division, the 4A swimmers were not about to be out done. They set a total of twelve state records. Most impressive were the times set by Ricky Berens from South Mecklenberg in his 200 IM, 1:49.61, and his 100 fly, 47.33. Kirsten Smith smashed Melanie Roberts 200 IM record with her own 2:01.08 for Athens Drive.
